Jan. 8th, 2024 01:42 amToday I am grateful for:
The skiff of snow we've gotten that is a gritty texture, which is good. We had a tiny bit of snow a while ago that had become polished into ice everywhere we walk, and on the gravel roads. Gritty snow is better traction.
It was colder today than it has been so far this winter; around -15 C. Not even that cold by our usual standards, but cold for THIS winter. It wasn't too bad to go out and do chores, I just wore long johns. Layers are important.
Hollywood seems more mobile today, but I don't know how things will go. We can't likely keep her on the stronger pain medication permanently. Everything is just "see how things go" right now.
Continuing to be careful with Roxy, just short trips outside on the leash to go to the bathroom and not much else.
My husband did some more work in the basement today, in the area where we will install the wood stove.
There was some extra chores today, with the cold front moving in. We put heavier blankets on the mares and took a cube of shavings to the garage in case I need to bring the goats inside.
Though I feel kind of wiped out from all of the worry about animals, I made myself go to the riding barn.
K (R's husband) was around for a while and we talked about Roxy's leg, since their dog had the same kind of injury resulting in surgery last summer. It was kind of him to ask how Roxy was doing, and to take the time to chat.
River was in a good mood today, and did well in our work.
Since I've been working on clarifying the "draw" circle again, I wanted to bring the "away" circle back to our sessions, and see if this time we can do them without confusion.
The "away" circle is kind of a big deal, in that it's a difficult thing to do, so I don't want to abandon it just because he's had some confusion with the "draw" circle. I want to be able to do both.
In our ridden work, I feel like he did a lot better with getting nice circles around pylons at the trot in each direction. Some of that has to come from me improving my body and leg communication.
He did one really nice halt from a canter.
I put a full winter blanket on him tonight as well. It's supposed to get down to around -20 C tonight, after an entire winter of only being around -5 C.
Then I came home, and I checked on Hollywood again. She was lying down, but she often does. She didn't seem to have any trouble getting up, so that's the important thing.
My Sweetie made supper, and we watched some more of "The Expanse".
I have to say, I feel like I've really been through an emotional wringer the last two weeks, after blowing up at/being blown up at by my husband over the lack of progress on the house (at least he's doing more), Roxy's leg, Hollywood being sore, our goat Brownie having some kind of issue (vet said it was false pregnancy, but I'm still seeing discharge, so now we may need to revisit that) and just general dealing with emotions surrounding family getting older. I'm just tired.
I learned that it is possible for a Bottle-Nosed dolphin to mate with a False Killer Whale to produce a hybrid offspring called a "wholphin". Dolphins ARE technically whales, so it's not THAT weird, but it's a rare occurrence. It has been observed in the wild as well as in captivity.
