Something to ponder.
Mar. 16th, 2020 10:46 pmMy friend felt that she would still go shopping "just for fresh things" which I though was odd, like, why bother stocking up on stuff, but still go for fresh fruit and veggies, if what you're trying to do is avoid exposure? I said "just eat frozen stuff for a while".
She responded with "well, frozen veggies are gross. They're all mushy." She HAS lots of canned and frozen veggies, but they're too gross to actually eat.
Then I said "at least you likely have more than enough meat to get you through a few weeks" (they likely have an entire giant freezer full of meat). She says "we don't have as much as you'd think, we'd end up having to eat the weird stuff". So, they have a giant freezer full of meat, but it's mostly full of weird stuff that no one wants to eat?
I know that they have a ROOM, that is about 12 feet by 12 feet, floor to ceiling with shelves full of canned food, dry goods, and potatoes and preserves. She's thinking that in a week, they'll be down to nothing but "weird food". I'm thinking that they could easily make chili, soup, pasta, regular meat and potatoes, stew, roast chicken and on and on.
I feel like if I had to, I'd have no real problem not shopping for two weeks. I would be out of fresh fruit and veggies, yogurt, and maybe my treats, but I'd have no problem eating my normal meals of veggie burgers, lentils, quinoa, veggies, or soup. If it went longer than that, like if things got dire and the grocery stores closed, I'd still have dried beans and lentils, and I could bake bread at home. I'd still have some frozen veggies and fruit. I'd be out of eggs and maybe milk at that point, but I'd still have food.
What about you? Is your freezer full of "weird food" that you aren't even sure how you ended up with it? Would you only eat it out of dire necessity? Do you buy frozen veggies, knowing full well that you hate them? Do you have a literal room full of food yet feel like you don't have anything to eat? Is this the mentality behind people who are buying the stores out of food?
