Nov. 10th, 2020 12:27 amIn spite of the whole taking Hollywood (one of the two retired mares at home) to the vet for more dental work, and that not panning out (I'll explain), I'm grateful that my sweetie helped with loading her in the trailer, and his careful driving. The roads weren't great. The whole thing was stressful and ultimately not very useful, but I am glad that Hollywood was home safe at the end.
This was a scheduled trip to the vet. After a recent bit of dental work for Hollywood, the vet said a tooth should be pulled (happens in older horses as the teeth wear out and there's very little root left holding it in, often better just to pull it). So we took her in, and the vet felt that she wasn't sound enough (arthritis in one leg, and soreness in another leg because it's the diagonal leg that compensates for the one with arthritis) to be comfortable through the procedure because it requires a long period of standing.
This was really frustrating for me, because this is the same vet who came out to float her teeth just recently, and she SAW that she wasn't terribly sound anymore. The vet then wanted to do some tests on her hind leg, and honestly they were not necessary, but I ended up doing that thing where you go along with it out of guilt. The vet comes up with "nothing really" but "it might be an abscess" (it likely isn't), and I'm just like, sure. Whatever. She had done something to that hind leg under sedation when they worked on her teeth a few weeks ago, and I cold-hosed her leg and such, and she was improving. She's been slightly off even before that, as I mentioned, because that leg compensates for her front one.
Ultimately, the whole trip ended up being a waste of time, a huge stress, and cost more money for tests I likely didn't need to do.
Oh well. As my husband said, we do our best and that's all you can do. I was trying to help Hollywood, even if it ended up being a whole big bunch of stress and risk (because of the recent snow).
I was so tired and stressed and burned right out after we got back that I just couldn't do anything. I napped for a while, read a bit, and we watched a movie. That was the sum total of my day.
I am grateful that I COULD just come home and do nothing today, that my husband helped with everything, and that we got home okay.
