Tuesday, August 1
Aug. 1st, 2023 10:24 pmToday I am grateful for:
A bright, sunny day.
I managed to throw in a load of laundry before going to the barn.
I also called the contractor who might help us with the siding. He never got back to us with a quote. What my husband wants from him is some idea of what he expects for an hourly rate.
At least this contractor still expressed interest in the job.
My husband should have been home by now, as in taking his accrued holiday time, but his job keeps holding him because they are short-handed. We are now into August, and he will be working for at least the next ten day hitch, so it's starting to push into that time of year where you are running the risk of running out of time on bigger projects.
It's not his fault, but the same exact thing happened last summer, and all the material for siding and insulating the house has just sat in a giant heap beside the house.
Then I went to the barn.
R told me all about River's escapades.
A new mare is being boarded there, and she is in the pasture with River's herd. River is normally a very laid back horse, and typically never acts "stud-y".
For the last couple of days, he apparently has been acting very protective of this mare, keeping her away from the other horses in the herd. He has been working like a maniac to keep her from joining them, keeping her as far away as possible.
River always acts like he has zero energy during our sessions, and puts very little effort into his trot etc. It's always a struggle to get him to invest some energy into not looking like a zombie.
Yet, he apparently was able to outrun and out maneuver an Arabian mare half his age, for the last couple of days.
R and her family decided to move River and a few other horses to a different pasture so that he would finally leave her alone, and he would not allow himself to be caught, or for them to catch the mare. This is also very atypical of him.
They finally got him, with some oats, and moved him. At that point R says he collapsed onto the ground and fell asleep so hard they were worried about him. He probably hasn't slept in days.
It's strange, because she mentioned this Sunday when we went there, and River wasn't chasing the mare at all when we went out there, nor was he hard to catch. Something must have changed?
Anyhow, he's fine, but he was stiff when I worked with him. He's no spring chicken, and I imagine he's paying for his exertions.
He did well with our Liberty work (I didn't ride him today because of the stiffness), and some ideas for the freestyle. Then I gave him some time to stretch on the big gym mat (the instability of the mat helps engage the core muscles, and River has a way of swaying on it that is likely a good mobility exercise).
I came home and let everyone out for a while, and I mowed grass for about an hour. The grass is really long right now, because it was so wet recently that I couldn't mow.
I learned that Dolly Parton still makes about six million dollars annually (twelve million total) apiece for just two of her songs; "9 to 5" and "Jolene" from royalties.
