Jun. 25th, 2025 01:55 amToday I am grateful for:
Sunny and bright, not too hot.
Oddly, I slept soundly but for only about six hours. I feel fine, but it's odd given how much I've been sleeping this week.
My Sweetie got home around the time I got up.
After I ate, and we chatted for a while, we chose to start burning the moldy hay in the barn (after conferring with the county on current restrictions), we did so as safely as possible using a big metal ring to burn the hay, and mowing a big area around it, and having a few buckets of water on hand if we needed it.
This is a very good example of the "non forward progress" job that just has to be done, but is not a solid step forward on the infrastructure of the house.
The hay is stored in the barn, but there is always a certain amount of wastage. Round bales often have a rind of unusable dirty, moldy hay because it often spends some time sitting on the ground before you get it.
Square bales are often better, but when you stack them, you still end up with a few at the bottom that are not usable, even though we do things like put the bales up on pallets to try and keep the air circulating.
So, we end up with a big pile of unusable hay at one end of the barn. I don't take it outside, because the horse with try to eat it anyways.
I keep it dry in the barn so that when we do burn, it will actually burn, and not be a wet smoldery pile of crap.
Anyhow, it often takes a long time to burn it all completely to ash, and that means nothing else gets done.
My Sweetie tended the fire while I went to see River (I helped up until then, hauling hay out to burn).
It was really good weather for working with River outside. Not too hot. His breathing was okay.
I talked with R, she said that L was talking about how much fun we had on Sunday. R has tried to tell L to lighten up and have some fun with Liberty, but it's tough because we all know that R is really competitive underneath any fun she might be having.
River and I worked on the freestyle again outside, not in an intense way, but working out if we can do it more or less the same way or not. I did stand up on him and toss the umbrella and the jacket, and BOY does it feel different doing that outside.
There are cars going by, horses in the pasture right beside the arena who might decide to run around, people walking around in the yard...lots more going on.
River did very well, even when the bit of wind made the umbrella move around on the ground.
Then we did a bit of work indoors on various things. Revisited the "away" circle.
Then I came home, my Sweetie was finishing up burning for the day, and I let everyone out for a while.
Poor Wonder has a sore foot. She often gets abscesses, and since we had a big rain and now it's drying out again, that's the kind of weather that encourages them.
I'm REASONABLY sure that's what is going on, so I cleaned out her hoof, and I think I see where it might be draining, and put a hoof boot on for her. Usually that helps, and she feels better when it drains.
Then we put everyone back in and went inside.
We watched the new "Nosferatu" which was not very original plot-wise, but I actually liked that the slow pacing and the nod to the classic story was so true to other versions. The excellent acting and sets and so on made this well worth watching if you like classic horror. That said, there was this weird thing where you were never entirely sure if something actually happened or if they were dreaming that was overdone and made it tough to follow at times.
Don't watch if you don't like yucky-ness. It's pretty yucky.
