Finally, a significant break in the cold weather. It has been below -20C for nearly the last four weeks, with only one or two days above that. Most of the time it was colder than -25C, and -30C at night. Today it was only -17C by the evening, and it feels amazing. I actually didn't have to wear my full bibs to go outside.
I went to see River today! Yay!
I talked to R for a while, and she is working on a way to get to a show in Kentucky this March, by leasing a horse in the area from a person she knows, rather than haul one of hers all that way. I would never have thought of that. Edit: Her goal is for NEXT March.
I also talked to another rider for a while.
Going to the barn today was literally more social contact with humans than I have had since my husband went back to work a week ago. With the cold weather I have been pretty much at home with the exception of getting groceries one day.
River did well. We just did ground work as it was still close to -20C, but he stayed focused and seemed to enjoy moving around and loosening his body. We should be able to go back to normal riding and lessons this week (below -20C R cancels lessons and doesn't recommend riding).
I had a nice petting session with one of the goats in her pen in the garage. She normally wants nothing to do with being pet, so she must be bored in there. They did get outside for a while today, but I put them back inside because they have been used to being warmer, so I'm going to wait until it is warmer outside before I leave them out all day/night.
Interesting thing I learned: I knew that owls could move their heads almost 360 degrees around, but I didn't realize they couldn't move their eyeballs at all. I thought they could move them a bit, but no. They are not spheres, but kind of long, so they can't "roll" them. Everywhere they want to look, they must move their whole head.
