Today I am grateful for:

Another pleasant day for January.

I did some vacuuming and sweeping before it was time to go to the barn, and my sweetie did the dishes.

We went to go see River, and chatted quite a lot with the other rider that I usually see on Sundays. She is 31, has already owned her own house for a few years, she did not buy it with a partner, and she knows how to do quite a lot of construction type work. She's done flooring and drywall, some electrical work, re-shingled her garage, and so on. She has a good job at the same company as my husband (it's a big company, and she does accounting software installation and maintenance, so she does not "work with" my sweetie). She makes a pretty good income already, but has also been with this company for nearly ten years, which is already a solid work history. She has a horse at this barn, and learned how to do the farrier work for her mare because she foundered and needs special maintenance. She also does aromatherapy. I don't think she's in a relationship, and you have to wonder why not, but maybe she's picky. I really admire her, because she has already become financially independent and seems so very competent, and is so young.

River did really well today. He was very relaxed but not lazy, and stayed focused. He seemed better about all the movements on the ground as far as all the "yielding" movements and staying with me at Liberty. We did some under saddle work too, fine-tuning our communication with my seat for halts and gait transitions.

I had a nap when we came home.

Apparently I must have just frittered the rest of the evening away because I don't have anything solid to say about it, but that's okay.

Today I learned: That Alexander the Great was pronounced dead, but it was noted that his body did not decompose for six days afterwards. It is now thought that he was NOT dead the day he was pronounced dead, but that he suffered from the neurological disorder Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS). The historical accounts of his fever and the progressive, symmetrical paralysis match the symptoms of GBS.

I'm not sure how they knew his body wasn't decomposing. Was there a period of the body lying in state? He was first buried in Memphis (Egypt) and then moved to Alexandria, but I guess the body would first have to be carried from Babylon, where he died, to Egypt where he was buried. Maybe they kept peeking during transit.

EWW: Okay, after some more googling, I found this...

Almost immediately after Alexander’s death in Babylon, chaos erupted. He had named no clear successor and the Macedonians quickly began to argue over the fate of the empire. So great was the quarreling that Alexander’s body was left unattended for many days in the Babylonian heat.

Yet legend has it that upon returning to the corpse, to everyone’s amazement, they found it still in pristine condition – untouched by decay. Perdiccas, the highest-ranking Macedonian commander in Babylon, then ordered Alexander’s body be embalmed and had it placed in a golden coffin.

Apparently if it WAS GBS, he might have still been conscious but unable to move. They would have used his apparent lack of breath (very faint) not his heartbeat at the time to determine death.
