Jan. 27th, 2022 01:38 amToday I am grateful for:
Very warm temperatures for January.
I talked to my Trainwreck sister briefly, and everything is horrible, so SNAFU. She has her car from her son, but can't go anywhere because she is snowed in. She could clear the snow with her tractor, but "it is hard to start". Probably she needs to keep it in her GIANT HEATED MECHANIC'S SHOP, but it is too full of crap to have an actual vehicle in it. A diesel almost needs to be kept in a shop to start in very cold temperatures. Anyhow, so that means she hasn't been able to haul water, because she uses water from town that then fills a big tank for her trailer, so she hasn't been bathing and doesn't seem to care about that. Her water pipes for the trailer were all freezing up anyways, so it hardly matters if she doesn't haul water. Then she says she doesn't even care about going to town anymore anyways, and as long as she has booze and smokes she doesn't need anything else. So, this is actually a pretty tidy picture of my sister.
I took the blankets off the mares at home to let their skin breathe. It's not threatening to rain or snow, so they are fine at these temperatures.
A good riding lesson. There was no mention of Covid, or the convoy, and I am grateful for that. I had been practicing polite ways to decline discussing those topics if they came up.
River did very well with groundwork/liberty today. That is what we worked on today because the wind was blowing hard enough that it was causing a lot of shifting and noise in the tent-like covered arena, and it was distracting. I got some good homework to work on.
I did end up riding him for a little while after the lesson, as he seemed to be more comfortable with all the snapping sounds from the arena by then.
That I made the drive safely. The roads weren't horrible, but there were some snow-covered areas that were tricky to navigate.
I came home, made some supper, and had a nap.
Today I learned how to do a training exercise called a cow turn, which is a way of getting the horse to move off of the wall on the hindquarters, and turning with the front legs. Similar to a pivot or spin, but the way of asking for it is different.
Also: A survey of funeral directors by Co-operative Funeralcare (per the BBC) found that the most frequently requested song to play at funerals in the United Kingdom is "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" by Monty Python, from their irreverent comedy classic Life of Brian. It beat out Frank Sinatra's "My Way."
