Feb. 4th, 2022 12:34 amToday I am grateful for:
Still fairly cold today, but a lot less wind.
I am grateful for my animals. They give my days shape and purpose, and they are lovely little beings. I often spend time with Wonder, just exchanging breath with her and snuggling (she's very snuggly), and I love sitting with the goats and ponies in their pen. The cats make me feel very loved when they all pack around me like sardines at night, and of course Roxy is my brave companion out into the night to do chores, and "she who barks at thumps".
I was able to spend a bit of extra time doing things like picking up pony poop and getting the big snow balls out of their hooves, and fixing Wonder's blanket that had slipped around all weird on her.
I talked to my sister S for a while, and that's often strange. Once again, we talk about family but no one ever asks about me, and what I've been doing. I think I actually do some interesting things, and no one never asks about that, or how I'm doing with my husband away at work a lot again, or dealing with the isolation of Covid, or just in general?
Then when I show them some of my paintings, or pottery, or a video of River and I, they are all shocked, like "I didn't know you were doing this".
I just stayed at home today, and though I felt bored and unmotivated, I did get a few things done. I did a load of laundry, put away some clean sheets, shook off the bath mat outside, did the dishes, emptied the shop vac contents into a garbage bag, and did a first-pass vacuuming of the addition. There is an absolute ton of dust in there from mudding the walls.
Today I learned that Charles Darwin liked eating exotic animals.
"As well as studying rare animals, Charles Darwin enjoyed chowing down on them. He joined a Cambridge society called the "Glutton Club," and he and his friends ate odd dishes like hawks, squirrels, maggots, and owls. When he was on his voyage of discovery aboard the Beagle, he ate iguanas, giant tortoises, armadillos, and a puma.
Sadly, there's no report of him ever saying "get me an alligator sandwich, and make it snappy." "
