Sunday, February 6
Feb. 6th, 2022 11:45 pmToday I am grateful for:
Really beautiful weather today. It's above freezing, it is melting, and the sun is shining. It isn't really spring yet, but this time of year the quality of the sunshine changes from cooling to warming, and you do feel it.
I got to judge 4-H speeches today. I have been judging them for likely more than ten years now in the community. Not every year, but most of them. They haven't been doing them for the past two years due to Covid, but this year they did them (with precautions).
I quite enjoy it. There aren't many ways that I connect with the community here. I don't have kids in school, I don't go to work there, I don't attend church, nor am I on a team or a committee or anything. This is about the only thing I do that connects me to the people in the town closest to us.
The woman who leads the group has done so for the whole time I have been judging, and there is one family that has had kids doing speeches this whole time. There is only one girl left from that family in 4-H now, and she is 17.
I went to see River, and that was nice. The "Sunday rider" was there too, and we chatted.
River did okay, but once again he seemed distracted, but only when the other person/horse left. I know he usually does better if there's another horse around, but I wonder why he doesn't seem to fully relax if it's just us? There are times when he does, so what is different on the days when he doesn't? He isn't doing anything bad, but you can tell he is not focused on me and our work.
Today I learned about the church in town, where we had the 4-H speeches. It's a tiny hamlet, you'd think I would know about the church, and maybe on some level I did, but since I never had a reason to go there it never quite registered.
I also learned about "low background steel". It is any steel that was made before the atomic bombs went off in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and all the testing in that era. When those bombs went off, the background radiation levels went up all over the world, and steel made after 1945 has higher levels of radiation because of that. Steel made before 1945 was needed for years and years, for equipment like Geiger Counters, specialized medical equipment, and other scientific applications where the higher radiation steel interferes.
So, sources of low background steel are things like old war ships and steel building girders.
Modern levels of background radiation have now lowered to more or less normal again, and methods of making steel have improved so new steel is okay again.
