Another good phone conversation with my Mom, where she seemed cheerful and lucid. My sweetie talked with her for a while too.
My sweetie went to town and picked up the chair we bought last time he was home, and we brought it in the house. It perfectly fits the spot we designated for it!
It was a little bit below freezing today, but still pretty nice.
We went to see River, and that was good. He was a little bit sleepy again, but reasonably willing. I didn't ride him for very long because by then my sweetie was pretty cold (since he's not moving around much while I am working with River), but he was soft and relaxed so I was fine with rewarding him with an easier day.
We came home and watched "First Cow", which was fairly interesting but had kind of an abrupt ending where the two main characters, who were running away from justice, basically just laid down in the woods and died.
The new chair performed well. It is a wide chair, almost a small love seat, and just big enough for us both to squeeze in there.
Today I learned that there had actually been an attempt in 1897 to reach the North Pole with a hydrogen balloon! It leaked a lot more hydrogen than was predicted, and it sank to the ground leaving the crew stranded on the pack ice after only two days. They did make it back to a very isolated island called Kvitøya, and tried to make a permanent winter camp there with supplies from the crashed balloon. By this point they had already survived for MONTHS on the pack ice, but died shortly after landing on Kvitøya, and it is a bit mysterious why they died at that point, after demonstrating that they were able to survive months already, by eating seals and polar bears.
Really, Kvitøya was so isolated I don't know how they would have ever been able to get back to civilization, or how long they could have survived there without vegetables etc.
