Mar. 1st, 2022 01:16 amToday I am grateful for:
Decent weather.
My sweetie hasn't done much in the addition this set of days off, but today he at least put some more screws in the plywood floor, to properly keep it flat
I went to pottery today, and lo and behold, there were other people still there! That was nice. I saw two deer again right at the front door of the building. They are not the least bit afraid of people, as long as you don't walk up to them.
Today was a glazing day. I had several pieces that have gone through the first firing, which makes them hard, but not completely hard. They are still porous enough to absorb glaze (which is minerals suspended in water, so it is kind of like a paint, but the glaze at this stage is not at all the color it will be after firing). Once the glaze is applied, the piece can be fired again, at a higher temperature, that will both melt the glaze and create that glossy finish, as well as "vitrifying" the clay itself, so that it is not porous anymore.
Lots of conversation with other people at pottery, which is nice.
My sweetie went back to his work apartment, and made it safely.
Today I learned of the existence of an animals called an aardwolf, that looks like a small hyena and mostly eats insects. I had no idea that these little guys existed! They live in South Africa, and weigh about ten to fifteen pounds. They eat a lot of termites, but are smart enough not to destroy the colony, so it will recover and make more termites for it to eat next time.
