Mar. 3rd, 2022 11:53 pmToday I am grateful for:
Having maybe some kind of answer for why my little goat Brownie is losing hair. At first I thought this was normal shedding, but I noticed yesterday that there were a few patches that looked bald, not normal short hair under the winter hair being shed.
I talked to a vet who says he thinks he knows a possible reason; low protein hay. So, I have brought Brownie into the garage for now as it is pretty cold tonight and for a few days, but I am going to look for a big dog jacket for her. She should be okay outside when it is a little warmer once she has a jacket.
She has lost most of her thick, downy undercoat which is a little early, but it doesn't look like there is summer hair underneath it, and she's losing it way too fast. She's not bald, but she has some bald patches, and those would be vulnerable to frost bite.
I am starting her on hay cubes that have alfalfa in them to add some protein, but doing it slowly to not upset her digestion.
Once again, I am grateful that we have a pen in the garage.
I had a brief phone conversation with my Mom, just me telling her about how I'm doing mostly. As always, I am grateful that she seems content, is cared for, and seems to be enjoying the food.
Then I spent some time on a site that is kind of a student guide to books called LitCharts. I am reading "The Left Hand of Darkness" by Ursula Le Guin still, and I keep getting stuck on who all the characters are because all of the names are kind of those made up names and I can't keep them straight. The site actually went through the book chapter by chapter and summarized everything, and even has annotations for everything and so on. It is a super useful site and I hope to use it again. It will help a lot with some of the more literary type books out there.
So, today I learned about the perils of low protein hay (I hope it is as simple as that).
I learned of the existence of LitCharts.
I learned that cow urine in India, Myanmar, and Nigeria is used as....a medicinal drink. You can buy bottles of it, just like any other beverage. There are other applications too, like floor cleaner and an emulsifying agent in diesel fuel.
