Here we go, the first official entry to our new lifeboat. I figured there wasn't much point in posting on Livejournal if we were getting cut off in a day.

Today I am grateful for:

Okay weather. Still cold for March somewhat, but not bad.

Talked to my Trainwreck sister, and she's hanging in there. They are now having what sounds like the same storm we had a few days ago, that left behind a ton of snow. I vented about my frustration in communicating with my sweetie the need to hire someone to clear the driveway, and EVEN SHE felt like it was a reasonable request. So, there.

I went to see River at the riding barn, and that went well. We worked on long-lining again, and today really clicked for both of us. I felt like I had a better feel for how to use the reins, and where to stand to best communicate "forward". River seemed less confused about me being all weird and standing behind him. Today we worked on weaving in and out around pylons and then lunging at walk, trot, then canter both directions using the long lines. I can really see how all our ground work has paid off with his willingness to move off of my aids and my voice, and that he already understands lunging and so on, so it makes long-lining easier.

The girl who takes lessons with River occasionally came today for one. Normally she would have had her lesson on Monday, but the weather was so awful R cancelled Monday lessons, and kind of doubled everyone up today. This girl came for her lesson right after mine, so River was already in the arena for her. It wasn't hard work for him to do one with her right after ours, because this girl does pretty easy things with him, and not physically demanding. Things he already knows.

I stayed and watched, and it was interesting to see how they interacted. My only reservation is that this girl rides him a bit inverted, which is something I have been working really hard to fix with him, and I know that R will likely work with her to do better. She also used a lot of rein to halt him, when she should be using more seat, again, something R will likely address.

There were several people around for the girl's lesson, as she was sharing the arena with another rider taking a lesson, so I enjoyed being social.

I came home and read for a while. I am SO CLOSE to being done my book, "The Left Hand of Darkness".

Today I learned a little about a species of tree called Arbutus trees. They are these lovely, twisted creatures that you see a lot in paintings of the West Coast in Canada. Emily Carr painted them. I didn't know what kind of tree this was, but I kept seeing them in paintings.

The kind that grow in B.C. are a broad-leafed evergreen that get red, edible berries.
