Mar. 13th, 2022 12:13 amToday I am grateful for:
Warmer today, just a tiny bit above zero. Sunny.
My Sweetie and I went to town. Lots to do today.
Mainly to pick up more drugs for Fatty. He is on a long-term prescription.
We stopped in at the pottery studio, just to see if some pieces I had ready to be fired with glaze were done. They were, and I was quite happy with the finished items.
We went to the movie store, and I picked up a used copy of a movie I am looking forward to called "Hostiles", and some others from the bargain bin. Nice thing about the bargain bin, is that they aren't all old movies. The store puts extra copies of rental movies in there after a year or so, as in they start with ten or more copies for rent, and after a while they just keep one or two for rent and sell the other. First they go to a ten dollar rack, then a two dollar bin. Some are still pretty good movies.
Then we went to the grocery store for a massive food haul. My husband was a bit surprised at how much we got, but not me. I knew it was going to be a big one. I haven't had a chance to shop for about two weeks, and we were out of everything for fresh food, and we needed regular cat food, and then we got some food he can take back to work with him (he buys some things here, since for some reason groceries are higher where he is).
It's nice to do the big trips when he's home, to have help hauling it all in the house and putting it away.
I am always grateful for the means to get groceries.
Then we went to see the new Batman with Robert Pattinson. He did a much better job than I thought he would. I like the direction this movie took, going back more to the idea of Batman being "the world's greatest detective". They also emphasized the original theme of Batman, that he was about justice, meaning bringing criminals to be judged, not killing them. The Dark Knight Trilogy with Christian Bale was about Batman at a different phase, where he was more violent, this movie is more about the thinking side.
I didn't like that the whole movie was darkly lit, even indoor settings, and oddly enough a scene in a hospital. They went a little too far with the Gothic grunge look, because even Wayne Mansion looked grungy and dark, and there was no cool Bat Cave or a lot of time spent on his gadgets. They did their best to have nothing look modern or clean, and that got a little strange.
Bruce Wayne was supposed to be modeled after Kurt Cobain, and I have no idea why. So, whenever Pattinson was Bruce Wayne, he was never nicely dressed (even the one time he wore a suit, he looked disheveled), and had shitty, greasy hair. Bruce Wayne is supposed to be a sharp-dressed playboy type.
Overall I liked it. The character of Selina Kyle (catwoman) was well-done, though I marvel at how small her waist was. TINY! Like she only had a little ring of meat around her spine. They didn't do a lot to explain her as a character. Nothing about her being a jewel thief.
Good film.
Today I learned about the bombing of Tokyo in 1945. Over 100,000 Japanese people were killed in this one incident, likely just as many wounded, many missing and bodies never found, and over 1 million left homeless/refugees, which was overall more deadly than Hiroshima or Nagasaki, even though the bombs dropped were not nuclear weapons. Many of those people died because of the fires caused by the bombs, as the whole region was more or less on fire. Some 2000 tons of incendiary bombs were unleashed over Tokyo over 48 hours, completely obliterating about 16 square miles.
It was meant to wipe out industrial areas that were supplying the Japanese with airplane parts, weapons, etc. because targeted bombing wasn't working, so a blanket bombing took place.

Date: 2022-03-13 03:30 pm (UTC)Have you seen Studio Ghibli's Graveyard of Fireflies? It relates to the 1945 fire bombings. And is possibly one of the best animated films of all time. Grim as you might expect, so be forewarned.
I'm surprised to read that the 1945 bombings were more deadly than the nuclear bombs. I wonder if that accounts for mortalities caused by the aftereffects of radiation?

Date: 2022-03-14 08:02 am (UTC)I agree that there have been so many Marvel and DC movies made in the last ten years or so that it is overwhelming to think of catching up with them if you haven't been all along.
You could watch each of the separate character movies and not need to really watch the others, like you could watch the three Iron Man movies and not need to watch anything else, and the two Antman movies. They do hint at the Avengers tie-ins, but not enough to make it hard to watch the separate character movies.
