Mar. 31st, 2022 02:40 amToday I am grateful for:
Very warm spring day. Things are really melting now. I'm hoping we see the trend towards warming up for real now, and no more weird swings into cold nights.
The ponies are shedding lots, and that's always fun. They are SO HAIRY that brushing them out is enormously satisfying when they shed.
I went to see River. We had a lesson today, and that went well. We worked over the obstacles, this time while mounted, and he did great. We ran through some of our groundwork homework, lunging using the bridle, and so on. We worked on transitions on a loose rein using the seat, and he did great. The moment you collect, he lifts his head in downward transitions. R is going to ride him tomorrow to see if she can learn why he is still doing this, since we have worked hard to eliminate errors in my hands and seat as the issue.
Overall, he did well, was calm and focused.
I came home and had a nap, all luxurious with kitty snuggles.
I watched some more "Gotham", which is great so far.
Today I learned about the 23rd Headquarters Special Troops, also known as the Ghost Army. This was a special branch of the military dedicated to using deception to convince the Germans in WWII that the military might of the Allied forces was greater than it was, or to distract them into believing that the movement or location of troops was elsewhere than it actually was.
This unit recruited artists and people from marketing backgrounds, set designers and actors. They created inflated tanks and trucks, created camps and false landing strips, all kinds of deceptive decoys. Anything to create the illusion of larger forces, or to draw the enemy's attention from the real troops.
They used loudspeakers and recorded sounds to make it sound like there were real trucks or tanks moving, real activity of soldiers in a camp. They used dummies, or did things like drove trucks in circles to make them appear like a much longer convoy. They had actors pose as officers go visit local towns so that spies would report their presence.
The existence of this unit remained classified until 1996. A documentary was made in 2013 by PBS.
"On Tuesday, February 1, 2022, President Biden signed into law: S. 1404, the “Ghost Army Congressional Gold Medal Act,” which provides for the award of a Congressional Gold Medal to the “Ghost Army,” in recognition of their unique and highly distinguished service in conducting deception operations in Europe during World War II. President Biden expressed gratitude to Representative Kuster and Senators Markey, Portman, Collins, and Blumenthal, among many others, for their leadership." (From Wikipedia).
