Apr. 1st, 2022 03:05 amToday I am grateful for:
A quiet day at home.
I was able to let the ponies and goats into their larger pasture for a while. There is still a lot of snow, but they enjoy pawing around.
A good phone conversation with my sister E.
We now have a pretty good ball park for costs with each of the contractors. One is remarkably higher, and I wonder why? At least the lower bid is also the guy my husband thought had more experience and had a better handle on the project in general.
I had a nap with the kitties.
Then I did the dishes, and some laundry. I put away some clean laundry.
I watched some more "Gotham", which is really good so far.
I learned of the existence of the oldest known joke book, Philogelos (Love of Laughter/The Laughter Lover). The oldest known collection of jokes was created by Philip the 2nd of Macedon (Father of Alexander the Great), he paid for a social club in Athens to write down its members' jokes (circa 4th century BCE). The oldest joke book we still have is the Philogelos which contains 265 jokes and dates likely to the 4th or 5th century CE.(So I'm guessing that there were once many volumes, and this one survived).
Apparently quite a few of the jokes are still relatable, being about things like farts, ugly wives, "intellectuals".
In 2008, Comedian Jim Bowen did a set consisting of these ancient jokes. Some of them of course, have lost their appeal because the context has changed.
