Apr. 13th, 2022 12:51 amToday I am grateful for:
It seems our area shouldn't get the huge dump of snow that other parts of Canada are calling for. However, most of my family lives right in the target area. I called two of my sisters today, and they both have been paying attention to the weather warnings and have stocked up on groceries. They literally may not be able to get to town for several days.
In talking to Trainwreck sister and sister E, I learned that sister E is recovering from Covid, and she said it was pretty miserable. She had vaccinations and everything, at least. She still had to do chores while being quite sick.
I learned that sister P (also currently recovering from Covid this week) who has lived further north, has sold the little farm she's had for the last six years or so (?). The sad part, is that her adult daughter (who lives in town) has a dog that was living on the farm, and she will very likely have to give it up. It is a big German Shepard farm dog, and might be tough to find a place in town for it. The dumb thing though, is that she was frantically posting on Facebook for people who could help her find a place to live that would let her keep it, at the very last minute as my sister is moving off the farm, when she's known that the farm has been for sale all winter.
My sister N, who has all kinds of health issues, is finally scheduled for knee surgery at the beginning of May. I truly hope this helps her with her mobility, as she has been almost unable to walk the last couple of years.
The septic person did not come today to replace the pump. I called and asked if they were coming today, and their reply was "we pumped out your tank yesterday, so you've got lots of time before you'll fill the tank, maybe we can get out tomorrow".
That was frustrating.
It was cold and crappy-ish today. A few days ago it was almost 20C and sunny, and today it was about -6C and windy and grey, and the wind was very cold. I guess we are at the edge of the big storm hammering other parts of Canada.
I went to see River, and that was very nice. He was very relaxed today, and we rode with the two little grey Welsh ponies again. I didn't ride a lot because it was kind of crowded, but we did lots of ground work and he did well with that.
I've been finding some damage again from wool moths, and this is SO frustrating. I spend a lot of time these days washing all of my stored clothing and putting it outside to freeze, hoping to kill these little fuckers once and for all, but they keep coming back.
It isn't even just the wool you have to wash, because they can lay eggs in just about anything, and the larvae will go from there to find wool.
I have wool jackets, wool sweaters, some skirts and pants, scarves, socks, blankets, and yarn. I am trying to store it clean, in plastic containers with sealed lids. I try to go through those tubs several times over the winter checking for evidence.
Then I will find some random overlooked item and it will be chewed in places.
These moths apparently LOVE homes with animals, so I am doomed.
Today I learned about the giant Gippsland earthworm that is native to Australia (of course, it's Australia).
From Wikipedia: "These giant earthworms average 1 metre (3.3 ft) long and 2 centimetres (0.79 in) in diameter and can reach 3 metres (9.8 ft) in length; however, their body is able to expand and contract making them appear much larger. On average they weigh about 200 grams (0.44 lb).[3][4] They have a dark purple head and a blue-grey body, and about 300 to 400 body segments.[2]"
