Today I am grateful for:

A quiet day at home.

Decent weather, a little above freezing and nice enough to sit outside.

I let the ponies and goats into their bigger pasture for a while, and I just sat with them and enjoyed the intermittent sun.

I groomed the ponies for a little while, and got tons of hair off of them. Nowhere near done shedding.

Brownie was willing to let me pet her today, so hopefully she will forgive me for putting a warm, cozy blanket on her during the blizzard.

My Sweetie is home from work. We walked around the horse pasture for a while with Roxy, and used the chucker to throw her ball for her.

We came in, made supper, and watched the last episode of Sherlock, Season 4. It was entertaining, but it felt like it was soup made with mystery leftovers (orts). Not bad, but odd, and the whole season felt disjointed and each episode felt disconnected from the others. The first three seasons were very tight, from a thematic and plot standpoint, and it feels like they were caught off guard by the chance to make the fourth season, but could not plan on getting a fifth, so this had to stand completely alone with nothing left to build on from the first three seasons, and no future season to work with. Really, only fans will like this.

Today I learned about Lake Fucine, in Italy. It was first drained by the Romans, who built massive tunnels to channel most of the water away. It became a huge area of very fertile farmland. After the fall of Rome, the tunnels fell into disrepair and the lake refilled. There were some failed attempts to shore up the Roman tunnels.

Another attempt was made by Italian nobleman and banker Alessandro Torlonia, who engaged Swiss engineer Jean François Mayor de Montricher with the project. The project expanded on the original tunnels, adding new outlets. The work was finished in 1870, and the lake was being drained again in 1873. This time, the entire lake was drained for farmland.

More drainage tunnels and canals were added in 1942.

To this day it remains a fertile agricultural area.
