Today I am grateful for:

A very nice day, sunny and fairly warm.

I managed to pull out the broken plastic poles from one corral, that were used for holding up the electric fence last year. I will do the same thing this year, but I am changing the configuration slightly.

I went to town, and managed to remember dog food and cat litter pellets, some new electric fence posts, and to get cash for when the farrier comes.

I went to pottery, and my vase was there. It turned out very well.

The woman who misplaced it was there, and she really acted like it was no big thing, so who knows. Maybe it was just an accident? I will still have to keep an eye on my work.

There were people there, and it was nice to socialize. It is feeling comfortable now, as I get to know everyone, and I know where things are in the studio, and I know what is expected of me in terms of clean up and protocols.

It is a very uncomfortable feeling to start over in a new location (the old studio was closed because the building was condemned), work with a different group of people (because I am coming on a different day), and deal with all the Covid protocols (because it is a Senior's residence, we have to sign in, fill out a form, sign out). I didn't know where any of the tools or glazes or so on were, everything was so unfamiliar.

I went through this too, when I changed barns and you feel so weird about everything for a while, because there are different expectations, you don't know where anything is, you have to feel out the barn culture, etc.

I had a TON of work at the studio. We are going to be doing a Raku firing in June, and I have to make a few things out of the special Raku clay, and it has to be bisque fired before we do the Raku glaze. Raku firing is a lot of fun, and looks really interesting. I'm lucky to have the opportunity to do this, because it takes having someone who knows what they are doing, and enough space to do it. It is done outside with a propane-fired kiln, and the firing is fast. An hour or something. Then everything comes out while still red hot, handled with tongs, and placed under a metal container with a pile of sawdust and newspaper which will ignite, smoulder, and make an oxygen-deprived environment for the cooling which gets you interesting glaze results.

So, I made a few things tonight for Raku, though this is the first stage. Then I had a bunch of trimming to do. I was really happy that I got a good lid for what might be an urn.

I also made another mad rush to get groceries before the store closed, and I made it. Once again, it seemed like an outrageous amount of money for a relatively small amount of food. Now, a few of my staples are TWO dollars more per item. I am still grateful for being able to get groceries, and I made a point of buying an item to donate. I am sure that it is needed now more than ever.

I came home and finished up the Mother's Day cards I started last night.

I learned about about Andrés Rodríguez Pedotti, a Paraguayan army major general who launched a coup against the dictator Alfredo Stroessner (after having served Stroessner as his closest confident for 35 years). Pedotti successfully overthrew and exiled Stroessner, re-democratized Paraguay, signed a Paraguayan constitution with presidential term limits into law, and then stepped down.

He was President from February 3, 1989, to August 15, 1993. He was the first President to step down at the end of his term in decades.
