Today I am grateful for:

Decent weather. A little cool, but okay.

I got a few things done before I went to the barn. I did some vacuuming, litter, put away clean dishes, folded and put away some laundry, took out the compost pail and some recycling.

I looked up real estate listings in the same tiny town my Mom lives, and found two houses very similar in age, size etc. as her house, and they are asking more than double what my Trainwreck sister thinks she should pay. I forwarded the information to Sister S.

I went to see River, and there was no one around. There was no one around yesterday, either. It is odd that just because R is sick (covid, and she is staying in the house) and not doing lessons this week that no one is coming just to work with their horse. It felt strange to come during what is normally a busy time of day and no one is around.

River did well today. We worked in the outdoor again, and did our usual groundwork and Liberty. He is doing well with Liberty outside.

Under saddle, we worked more on riding with my seat, good halts with seat, backing up, etc. He did better with turning on his haunches, and I did my best to really focus on using my seat bones and legs and body weight to help him move over. He is happier with me not using the reins.

We had a really lovely canter today, where he really reached under, lifted, and collected with good headset as well, and I wasn't using the reins to cue it. This was him. I don't know if we'll ever replicate this, but it was beautiful.

I came home and let everyone out into their pastures for a while. I was giving Hollywood some scratching, and I sadly noticed that there is a patch of dead skin where her blanket was sitting on her withers this winter. It was likely putting pressure on that one spot a lot. I didn't notice it before because the hair isn't gone, but that patch will likely grow in white. There is a soft pad on the blanket where it sits on her withers, but her blanket kept twisting and the pad would shift to one side. Every time I went outside I would have to straighten it again, but it still managed to make a sore spot. Poor girl.

I learned that in WWII people painted their dark cattle with white stripes to make them more visible to motorists at night. People were not supposed to drive using headlights because of the blackout laws, but that resulted in lots of collisions with cattle. So, painting stripes might have helped with that.
