May. 30th, 2022 02:36 amToday I am grateful for:
A bit of a moody, overcast day, but decent.
My cousin's daughter had her baby. This makes my Aunt and Uncle great grandparents.
Getting a reasonable amount done in the garden. I pulled more grass, and added lots of compost to one part that was still pretty hard with clay soil.
I went to see River, and enjoyed it. I missed riding him this week while I was away.
While I was away, R said that the people who live right next to the riding barn had a fire get a little out of control, and caught some trees or grass on fire on their property. If it had gotten out of hand, R's place would have been at risk, because there is a lot of trees on both sides of the property line.
The fire trucks ended up needing access to R's yard to put out the fire, and she posted pictures of the water tank trucks and fire trucks in the outdoor arena.
She needed to move all the horses away from that pasture, both because of the fire trucks and the possibility of the fire spreading. They had to walk the horses (including River) past all the vehicles and people. She said they did really well.
River did well today. We did our groundwork and Liberty, as well as riding with the bitless in the outdoor arena.
I came home, let everyone out into the pasture for a while, and did more compost spreading. I should have planted the garden already, but it'll be fine.
I had a nice bath, and watched some "Gotham". It's gotten so that a character dying doesn't even create interest, other than a mild curiosity about how they will come back to life.
Today I learned about "koro", a delusion disorder whereby the patient believes that their genitals are shrinking and will disappear inside the body. It can affect men and women (who might think their nipples or vulva are disappearing into their body).
Historically there have been sweeping epidemics of Koro, generally during times of great stress and anxiety on national scales, and then hordes of men mostly go running to the doctor with their penises clutched tightly, or wrapped around a stick to keep it from retracting up into their body. It has happened all over the world.
From this page https://coconuts.co/singapore/features/explainer-singapores-pecker-panic-1967-when-men-believed-their-dicks-were-disappearing/:
" Singapore has remained a notable highlight in the record books of genital retraction syndrome after a particularly severe nationwide epidemic in 1967.
For weeks in October and November that year, an alarming rumour went viral — one that stated that Koro was caused by eating the flesh of pigs that were recently vaccinated in a mass campaign to combat swine fever. The rumour snowballed to the point where the sale of pork in markets, stalls and restaurants stood at a standstill.
Usually limited to only one or two cases in a lifetime, general practitioners were then hit by an average of 70 to 80 cases a day. They arrived by the dozens, holding on to their penises with hands, rubber-bands, strings, clothes pegs and other household utensils (that hopefully they never re-used again)."
Also, Wikipedia. Read the whole thing, it's fascinating. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koro_(medicine)
