Jul. 5th, 2022 01:11 amToday I am grateful for:
Decent weather.
My Sweetie helping me to load up the truck with all the old wood we recently identified as junk, and took it to the dump together.
Then we got cleaned up and headed to the city.
We got some solid rubber tires for a garden cart that is otherwise in good shape, and another wagon meant to be hauled behind the ride on lawn mower that we haven't used for years because the tires are shot. It is also otherwise in good shape. Having those carts ready to use makes other jobs easier.
Then we got to see Weird Al LIVE!!!! He played "his" songs rather than his more famous parodies, which was interesting, because we got to listen to what songs HE wanted to play (I'm sure that for his bigger concerts, he has to play all of the more commercially successful songs, probably the parodies).
It was a relatively small venue, and I was surprised by that. This was actually a theater, with a capacity of about 1,700 people, and our seats were pretty amazing (and not THAT expensive), only four rows from the front.
It was really strange to see him like this, at a pretty stripped down event with just four other band members, and he seemed so....human?
For all that his songs are silly, you can't help but appreciate his musicianship. The songs are pretty complex, and very well played, and his voice is REALLY good, especially for his age. I can't imagine him still finding some enthusiasm for touring after being a musician on tour for most of his adult life, but he was enthusiastic, and his singing was great.
It was pretty amazing to see him so close up, and in such a relaxed show. He could have been sitting with a group of friends somewhere. He likely doesn't HAVE to do little shows like this, but it's great to be able to see him.
I learned that the Mars Climate Orbiter, a 1998 NASA mission attempting to launch two probes in the Mars atmosphere, failed because the landing data were calculated using the imperial system, but the navigation team expected them to be written in the metric system. 328 millions dollars lost. Since the software (parts with Imperial units, parts with Metric units) didn't work properly together, the unit approached Mars Orbit badly, and either was destroyed by crashing into the surface of Mars, or drifted out into space.
