Jul. 7th, 2022 11:40 pmToday I am grateful for:
Waking up to kitty snuggles.
That I went to town today, and that was enjoyable.
I got the mail, and found that my husband hadn't paid our taxes after all. We got a notice in the mail today, saying we were late. I remember asking him if he was paying it when H&R Block finished our return, and he made this weird statement that "we'll get our assessment in the mail later", like he didn't see the amount that H&R gave us as the official amount owing, I guess? Well, it is HIM that owes taxes, because I am listed as his dependent. He won't remember this next year, either.
I paid the other bills at the ATM at the bank.
I went to the thrift store, and found all five seasons of Alias, a show I never watched when it was on, but I've heard that it was good. It was cheap enough that it's not a big deal if it isn't to my taste. I found a shirt, and a book too.
I got some groceries, and I am always grateful for the ability to get food.
I came home and let everyone out. The small pen that the ponies and goats are in is an absolute mud hole with all of this rain. No, I can't just put them in another pen. The goats need a solid fence both to keep them in, and to protect them. They do have a solid concrete walkway (moved from around the trailer to their pen when we did the tear-down) and that at least keeps them out of the mud, but it means all of them stand around on it instead of walking around more. I do let them out into the bigger (drier) pen most days, but I feel bad about their pen. Normally it isn't THIS WET for an entire month.
Today I learned that Jeff Baxter, former guitarist for the Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan eventually become a US military defense consultant advising the Department of Defense, contractors, and the US Congress. Apparently his expertise in using the equipment for sound recording translated into a new career, thanks to encouragement from his neighbor who was a missile engineer.
"Baxter fell into his second profession almost by accident. In the mid-1980s, his interest in music recording technology led him to wonder about hardware and software originally developed for military use, specifically data compression algorithms and large-capacity storage devices.[7] His next-door neighbor was a retired engineer who had worked on the Sidewinder missile program.[7] This neighbor bought Baxter a subscription to Aviation Week magazine, provoking his interest in additional military-oriented publications and missile defense systems in particular. He became self-taught in this area, and at one point wrote a five-page paper that proposed converting the ship-based anti-aircraft Aegis missile into a rudimentary missile defense system.[7] He gave the paper to California Republican Congressman Dana Rohrabacher, and his career as a defense consultant began."
