Today I am grateful for:

Hot and dry, and it felt like summer.

I went to see River, and we had a lesson today.

We worked on refining our lunging in preparation for a pattern we might do for another video competition. I will try to find some sportsmanship inside of me.

He did really well at the lunging, or rather I did well at communicating. Both.

Oddly enough, when I rode with just the neck rope today, he did not want to back up. He has backed up very nicely off of it for a while, so I have no idea what prompted this confusion/refusal today.

So, R worked with him for a while, and sorted that out. Likely just testing things.

Worked on backing with just a voice cue, which will help with the backing mounted at Liberty.

We talked about the big event R is going to soon, it is several big, well-known trainers (Liberty or Liberty adjacent) in Kentucky. R is almost self-taught, and there are not a lot of opportunities for her to advance her own skills.

This gave me a bit of insight into why the on-line showing is important. It is just about the only group that could be seen as an assessment of how we are doing. There is no one around here who could even say whether or not R is "doing it right".

One of the younger riders was having her lesson outside, and was playing some David Bowie during the lesson. Kind of fun, and felt a bit like a festival to be watching someone ride to music.

I had a nice conversation with the girl's mom about music and so on, and it was very nice. I so rarely have mutual conversations with people about things like music and community.

I learned that the first can openers were only popularized about 50 years after the first canned food. The first cans were very thick and made of wrought iron lined with tin. They were opened with a hammer and a chisel.

I came home and let everyone out for a while, and moved several more pails of dirt from the big pile over to the side of the house.

I picked a bunch of delicious garden lettuce for a big salad. I LOVE garden lettuce, especially since it is so expensive in the store. It is so easy to grow, I often wonder how everyone doesn't have at least lettuce in their yard in the summer. You literally just plant it and water it.

One of the things I miss most about riding is the social aspect. I just loved shooting the breeze with other horse people.

I promised myself that I wouldn't get on a horse before both of the weddings, b/c it would be really bad if I broke something. I'm hoping to find a barn with a very calm horse and a good teacher when we cool off in late October. It's been 7 years since I rode, and I have no muscles left, but still..... I think I can do this.

I just picked the last of the leaf lettuce today. It's on the bitter side this year. I like to plant it so that it rings a centre of tomato plants. The tomatoes are growing now!
