Aug. 21st, 2022 12:26 amToday I am grateful for:
More hot weather.
The contractor popped in to measure the area that will become a cold room (vegetables), so that he could buy enough lumber when he does his shopping on Monday to frame that in as well.
A short conversation with Sister E. Our Sister S is recuperating from surgery, but is not very awake yet.
I grudgingly decided to try to get something done today. I chose to cut all the suckers away from the base of a tree beside the house, and clean the area around it, where dirt and old leaves have built up, and grass I couldn't mow. It was taking over that whole area near the back steps. It looks much better now.
I mowed for a while, about an hour, while I let everyone out into their pastures (I found Wonder's grazing mask).
Then I pulled more weeds near the house, where all the bare dirt from construction has just become a waste land. More huge, aggressive Canada Thistle. I cleared a small area, and I really need to mulch it.
I learned that Umuganda is a national holiday in Rwanda taking place on the last Saturday of every month for mandatory nationwide community work from 08:00 to 11:00. Participation in umuganda is required by law, and failure to participate can result in a fine. The program was most recently re-established in 2009, and has resulted in a notable improvement in the cleanliness of Rwanda.
Exemptions are made for those younger than 18, and older than 65, or those otherwise unable to participate.
