Sep. 28th, 2022 03:24 amToday I am grateful for:
More absolutely gorgeous weather.
I had to dump the big tub of pony water out and refill it all. That takes some doing. It has to be done from time to time.
I went to see River, and it was approaching one of the lesson times for R's husband. I had meant to go a little earlier, but it didn't work out.
So, in my effort to stay out of his way, I improvised. I took my stuff outside and just did everything out there rather than in the barn.
Then he goes into the barn, realizes what I am doing and says to me "you could just use a stall if you want".
Really? I kept getting the impression that my very presence in the barn was "in the way".
You can't give every indication that my stuff is in the way, my horse is in the way, I am in the way, and then wonder why I resort to going outside to avoid conflict.
Well, maybe it's dawning on him that he's maybe asking a lot. I hope so.
The ride went well. I chose to start by going for a nice mosey type pasture ride, which was lovely. Then I did a bit of work on the obstacles while mounted, and he is doing good with some of the things that are typically harder for us (side passing, turning on hindquarters). I am really proud that some of the obstacles like walking on a raised "bridge" or across a tarp are now okay for him. A few years ago, they were not easy for us at all.
I did a bit of liberty work, but didn't harp on the halts or the leadline stuff since we've spent the last couple of weeks working on that a lot. I think we're both burnt out on that for now.
I talked for a while with another rider; she is taking her horses home for the winter soon. We have plans to keep in touch outside of the barn, and I really hope we do (this is the woman we recently went to her house for a visit).
I came home and noodled around for a while, then went upstairs to work on some necklaces.
I learned that That the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission had planned to carve out an artificial harbor in Northern Alaska using buried nuclear explosions. The plan (Project Chariot) had a lot of public support and would have been carried out if the Inupiat village of Point Hope hadn't strongly opposed it.
This was a proposal made by a physicist, Edward Teller. He thought it would be a good economic development idea for the new state of Alaska.
Naturally, it would have dumped a ton of radiation into the environment, much less the huge amount of dirt and rock polluting the area, and on an on. It would have been horrific.
No actual purpose could be found for the proposed new bay, as other naturally formed bays already exist. There was literally no good reason to blow a hole into the side of Alaska with nuclear bombs, other than it would be a great way to start of America's "nuclear age".
It has never formally been cancelled.

Date: 2022-09-29 07:45 am (UTC)It's not bad now because I can do some stuff outside, but winter won't be easy. This also means trying to share the small arena, or working around his student's times.
R is okay about having me ride if there is a student, K is not.

Date: 2022-09-29 10:09 am (UTC)I think just about everyone else comes for specific lesson times. There is one young girl who has her horse boarded there too, and they come in a lot earlier, so maybe they avoid his lesson times by default.
