Today I am grateful for:

Another stunning day.

Talking with the contractor, and things are going well. We are at a point where to keep things moving, we need linoleum for the downstairs bathroom. My Sweetie and I don't have any ready, and I do not drive in the city (where all the lino is).

So, the plan is to go with the contractor and his wife to the city tomorrow, and pick out lino and paint for the bathroom if we can manage. It will be odd to head in for a materials run with them, but we will likely do fine.

At least relations with him have been good since I put my foot down about the exterior doors. That whole process was way too forced, and we did NOT have to make that decision that quickly. We can put the doors in at any time.

Anyhow.

I went to see River, and we had a lesson today.

My homework from R had been to look at this book called "You can Heal Your Life" by Louise L. Hay. The idea behind part of this book, is that certain illnesses can be directly correlated to emotional issues, and can be helped with affirmations. Literally saying that being near-sighted is because of being afraid to look forward, and that this can be fixed by curing your fear of the future.

I do understand how mental issues can affect health. By now it is no mystery that people under a great deal of stress and suffering have compromised immune systems. We also understand that there are people out there who end up having a lot of injuries because they are so torn up inside that they aren't aware of their surroundings, or some part of them almost wants to be punished.

That said, I have never been comfortable with Hay's oddly specific way of looking at health issues, and it almost feels like blaming a person for being near-sighted or being constipated because they "won't let go of the past".

Many of the affirmations though, are pretty harmless. It isn't going to hurt anyone to say "You are safe, don't worry about the future, I'm not going to sell you or anything. We have a plan to work through your issues with the trailer and oral medication."

So many of the affirmations are just different ways of saying "don't worry, let go of anger or trauma or whatever, move forward to positive things. Okay.

One good thing about affirmations (and I approve of this side effect, though I don't personally use the affirmations to try to cure near sighted=ness or oily skin) is that it is much like how having a plan settles your mind.

What horses do pick up on, is your anxiety or your indecision. So if you go in there, and inside you are all torn up because you don't know what to do about something, they know. If you are supposed to be their leader, you need to have certainty about things. That is no different than our human relationships. Our leader has to be certain, or everyone goes nuts and challenges the authority. Horses do the same thing.

SO, if the affirmations help you settle down and feel like you have a plan, the horse will definitely relax.

Our lesson was okay. We ran through the obstacle course at Liberty to see if we could polish it up in a week or so for the last virtual show this year. That was the class I didn't get a score for because of my shirt, so maybe we'll try it again to get an official score.

The other class we might do, is also a "retry". The bridle less pattern. Mainly just because we can enter the same class again and try to do a little better (though we did okay the last time too).

We'll see.

At least today he was comfortable standing in the halts. Finally. I've worked on that now for about three weeks.

R's husband K was around, and I did my best to make non-weird small talk.

After my lesson, I took River into the barn in the center ties, and then K's student shows up for her lesson. Though he wasn't too rude about it, right away i had to move River and put away all my stuff because his student "needed the space in the middle".

This is still frustrating for me, because I can't avoid being in the barn at this time, my lesson just ended and I need to finish up too.

Yes, I could just go into a stall, but you see my point? Why am I instantly less important than his student, even though we are both there for a lesson that day?

I get tired of feeling rushed, or needing to move my horse.

I came home and watched the newest "Batman". We did see it in the theater, but I liked it enough to watch it again.

Today I learned that Pan-Am's first Round-the-World flight was unplanned. The flight's return journey via Hawaii was cancelled after Pearl Harbor was attacked, and with the help of Auckland's library system, a route was plotted to return to America via Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Congo, and Brazil.

The crew had no charts for areas west of Auckland and had to develop a plan with the help of the Auckland library. They first returned to Nouméa to evacuate 22 Pan Am employees, women, and children, and take them to Gladstone, Australia. From there, they flew via nine intermediate stops, under radio silence and with assorted threats along the way, before reaching New York before dawn on 6 January 1942.

They were literally flying around and somewhat through the war. The Sea Clipper was a frickin' SEA PLANE. Every time they had to land, they had to land on water. That meant at one point landing on the Congo, where they were not expecting a plane to land. There could have been sand bars or submerged trees. Once they landed on a bay that had mines in it (meant for ships).

They had engine problems, and were shot at, and were flying across hostile seas and land without charts, and of course the pilot had to worry about fuel, and feeding people on board, and so on.

It is quite the story.

That worldview of R's really isn't benign. The belief that thoughts create illness has been a surprisingly common perspective that's done tremendous harm to people, particularly people with chronic medical problems. As you indicated, people who suffer from those disorders have literally been viewed as causing them, and therefore stigmatized. Here's an example: I did some research on epilepsy early in my career, and to my shock, found a large number of papers published in medical journals ascribing seizure to negative mindsets or to certain dysfunctional personalities. I was horrified that physicians would actually believe such nonsense, but there is was. Similar theories have been advanced to explain a wide range of medical conditions that are usually difficult to diagnose and treat medically. I suspect that people advance these kinds of mentalist theories because it feels better to blame the patients when they can't understand their illness.

I also ran into this kind of thinking when I was diagnosed with cancer and accessed websites serving those with cancer. It was distressing to see how many newly diagnosed patients were planning to forgo chemotherapy and just practice positive thinking instead.

Of course, having a positive outlook can be helpful when one is ill. But that doesn't mean the attitude can cure the illness or that a negative outlook was the initial cause!

I knew a strange person who said that women with heart ailments were never loved by a man, and men with heart ailments were never loved by a woman.

I said, You have stomach problems. What does that mean?

They replied, without missing a beat: I was always hungry for attention and never got it.

It must be amazing to have the world's woes figured out like that!

My near-sightedness ended a few years ago, and now I need reading glasses for fine illustrative work. WHO BLINDED ME, and WITH WHAT?

I had cavities, too.

I told the vet, Watch out for our bull terrier, he's a fear-biter!

The vet was not convinced. No, he's a pleasure-biter.
