Oct. 3rd, 2022 01:50 amToday I am grateful for:
Lovely weather, that gently folded into a beautiful evening with an early moon.
I had to say, I am very happy with the progress in the house (though it looks like we are likely not getting siding on this year, because the windows are late, and the two go together). I am still frustrated with how there is a ring of ugliness around the house. Bare dirt, or dirt full of weeds, mostly. Piles of stuff that some is going to be used on the house, some is...?
All around the house these items represent either an unfinished task (like mulching, weeding, laying the last bricks or putting them away, using the boards or putting them away, a set of stairs to be installed, a pile of rocks that need to go somewhere else) or a decision (what are we doing with it).
I went to see River, and that was nice. A very nice day for it, and no one has lessons on Sunday so I don't have to be on high alert the whole time to get out of anyone's way.
I took some time to clean a few things. I washed his saddle pad and cleaned his leather girth and my boots, and his bridle. Then I oiled the leather items.
By then another rider showed up (not a lesson). It was nice to be social with her, and we rode together in the outdoor arena with the dusk falling and the moon rising.
River did well on the ground work. I couldn't use the outdoor obstacles since there were horses in that pen grazing. I did work on some of the movements needed.
Since his saddle pad was wet, and my bareback pad was not in the car (?) I just rode him bareback with the neck rope. He did really well, and my seat felt pretty good even though it was bareback. I'm fortunate that he has a pretty smooth trot and he maintains a good rhythm.
I came home, and did more work on the blanket I started repairing last night. I ended up just putting a giant piece on the butt of it, where he keeps getting chewed on. I feel a little fatalistic about this, as my repair likely won't last very long. Such is having horses together.
Today I learned that with the exception of sloths and manatees, all mammals have exactly seven cervical vertebrae. Whether a wee mousie or a giraffe, a human or a whale.

Date: 2022-10-03 09:11 pm (UTC)Let it dry, and then lightly wipe it with a proper saddle oil on a clean cloth. Don't over do it. If it has been years, let that oil soak in for a day or so, and give it another wipe.
Pretty much any tack shop will have the right cleaning products. I don't go for any of the weird stuff, just straight up Fiebing's saddle soap and saddle oil (neatsfoot). Don't bother with any of the sealants or anything like that.
There are videos online about cleaning, if that helps.
