Oct. 13th, 2022 01:12 amToday I am grateful for:
Nice weather today. A little windy, but still sunny.
I went to see River today, and we had a lesson. We filmed two different patterns for use in the virtual show.
I remembered to wear the right shirt, and I felt adequately prepared for the classes. River's breathing has been good, and the cooler weather helps.
We did a great job, I feel, on both of the patterns. We were doing the same ones we have done earlier, but trying to improve our performance. We are still pretty new to doing patterns completely at Liberty, and the ridden class without a bridle.
We did well enough that one try at each was probably good enough.
I am very glad that things have settled down drama-wise at the barn. R's husband K seems to be less weird about me being around, and while I am still doing my best to keep my tack and brushes etc. picked up (I have to bring it all out at the start, but I put it away and bring it out again when I'm putting River away instead of leaving it out in between). I also just...don't interact with his students in the barn. It's kind of sad, but I guess for HIS students, the part where they are brushing and tacking up is still part of their lesson, since they are very new to horses for the most part, and need close supervision.
I had a nice conversation with one of the parents of a student (we often talk when I see her) and that met my social needs for the day. That is one of the things I wanted from having lessons at a barn, was a context for social interaction. The barn for me is my "third place" (an interesting cultural concept. A third place is a gathering place outside of the home or work, where there is a light, loosely constructed social atmosphere where regulars come and go. Often it can be a local pub, or coffee house, cafe.).
I spoke with John, the contractor, about tomorrow. Tomorrow is expected to be the first day of extracting old windows, and installing the new ones. It will be an invasive experience, as he will need ongoing in and out access to the living space in the house. Like, at some point, our bedroom, our bathroom, and so on.
What he plans to do, is before he starts a window, he will put a styrofoam insert inside, and that way he can do most of the work from the outside and not leave an open hole. He will need to come in and out for the actual installation a few times.
I won't likely be able to sleep through much of this, and I am "buckling up" for a hard stretch.
Today I learned that the British had a secret WW2 plan called Operation Tracer to leave behind an observation post if the Germans captured Gibraltar. Six men were to be sealed inside a hidden chamber to observer the harbor and Strait of Gibraltar. They would have had 7 years of supplies and bicycle-powered radios.
They decided after the chamber was built, to abandon the idea, thinking it would be too much to ask of the soldiers. So, the supplies were distributed, and the chamber left behind on Gibralter. It was a secret until it was rediscovered by cavers in 1997.
