Today I am grateful:

For the sacrifices made for us, though I wish it never needed to happen at all.

For nice weather today. Sunny and a tad warmer.

Kind of annoyed again with the contractor. They are doing great work in the basement, but there are times when he latches on to something, a suggestion, and even though we say it isn't necessary, he will often kind of bring it up again. First again with me, as if to sway me over to his notion, and he will say "talk to your husband about it", and when I do, I will find out that he has already said no.

It's like he's so determined that he just keeps working at us one at a time, taking advantage of the fact that we aren't all in the same room at the same time.

His suggestion isn't a BAD one, but likely not necessary. Right now, there is no actual direct ducting that pushes heat into the kitchen. He desperately wants to cut a hole into the floor to link the kitchen to the furnace with some ducting. My husband is like "but the kitchen is surrounded by rooms with ducts, and is above a warm basement, and will likely be warm enough".

It is something we CAN add later, if we find that it is not warm enough.

Also, the contractor was openly critical of my painting job in the bedroom downstairs. I openly mentioned to him that when I primed the bare drywall, it was SO DRY that it sucked up the primer so quickly, and it dried almost instantly, and I couldn't correct several "lines" in the primer. There is pretty much nothing I can do about it, and for him to come to me today and say my paint job isn't great is out of line.

IT'S OUR HOUSE. IF I DON'T DO A PERFECT JOB ON THE PAINT, SO WHAT? For the record, it looks FINE. Unless you are standing there with a light shining on it and scrutinizing it for imperfections, it looks FINE. It is also the first coat, and by the time I get another coat on there, it will look even better.

He criticized all of my other painting jobs too, even though they look GREAT. The bathroom is just about PERFECT and he still had to say something.

Really, is he just trying to make us pay him to do the painting too, when I am perfectly capable of doing it myself?

I did my best not to react when he started in on me, and just said "I think it looks fine, and I am happy with it".

My husband has been happy with everything I have painted too.

After that, I went to see River, and I brought my little bluetooth speakers. I haven't used them much yet, because up until recently I was riding outside a lot.

In the winter, I often end up riding alone in the evening in the arena, and I think the music makes it feel a little less grim.

River did well. He stayed focused for the most part, and had good energy. We did our groundwork and Liberty, and I rode bareback with just the neck rope, and I did some weaving around pylons and such to work on bending and circles.

I came home and noodled around on the computer and had a rest, though I didn't sleep.

Today I learned about polyphyodonts. A polyphyodont is any animal whose teeth are continually replaced. In contrast, diphyodonts are characterized by having only two successive sets of teeth (like human beings).

Polyphyodonts include most toothed fishes, many reptiles such as crocodiles and geckos, and most other vertebrates, mammals being the main exception. Alligators have all new teeth come in (just like when our baby teeth fall out and get replaced) about once a year, and they may get 50 sets of teeth over their life time.

That said, elephants, manatees, and kangaroos all have teeth that are continually replaced throughout their lives by molars that keep emerging from the back of the jaw.

There is a bawthroom at Ratopia that isn't heated and never was. We have a spare antique radiator in the garage in case we want to install it. (It might be a good project to strip it and repaint it.)

Perhaps your contractor has seen homes like yours that required the heat and he wants to be conscientious...?
