Today I am grateful for:

Moderate winter weather.

I took the heavy outer blankets off of the mares at home. We only have a day of warmer weather, then expected to be colder, so I will probably put them on again tomorrow.

No improvement with dear Fatty. Sigh.

Late last night (or early this morning) I tried to do something to feel a little better about things. I put away stuff to clear the kitchen, the living room, and the dining area. It has been getting very cluttered, because for the time when the contractors were here most days I was not getting much sleep, and just too tired to stay tidy. Then I had to move everything away from the windows for that part of the job, so things just got piled up. THEN I was bringing in stuff from the sea can, and it doesn't have a "place" yet.

So I did a bunch of clearing in the main living space even though it just mostly got moved to other parts of the house. For now, I just need my main living area to be more open again.

My Sweetie and I did a few maintenance cleaning type things when we got up. Took out the garbage and some of the recycling, I vacuumed and swept.

Then we went to see River. It was not too cold, and he was in a good mood. He got to eat before I showed up, so he's usually more mellow when he's not thinking about food.

We worked on getting him to switch sides at Liberty, and I am trying to do more and more work without the whip as an arm extension. He is starting to listen to my body more.

Then I rode for a while bareback with the neck rope, and that went well. Then I rode a little with the bridle, and it's odd to do that now, because he actually is happier with just the neck rope, but he needs to work on collection with the bridle.

It was fun, and good for me to do something positive with River.

We came home and watched the "Dark Tower" movie, a supposed adaptation of the Stephen King novel, but it didn't really feel like it. It felt more like a story using some of the same characters and ideas, but not following the plot of the novel. I wouldn't say it was bad, but it was it's own thing.

We spent some time washing and grooming Fatty. Things are pretty grim, and he is not keeping himself clean, and getting urine on his hind legs.

Again, I know things aren't improving for him, and where this leads. I am reminding myself that all creatures die, and he could have just died alone outside all those years ago instead of spending this time with us, happy and warm and cared for in our home. We have given him a good life.

I learned about Unit 731. Unit 731 (Japanese: 731部隊, Hepburn: Nana-san-ichi Butai),[note 1] short for Manshu Detachment 731 and also known as the Kamo Detachment[3]: 198  and Ishii Unit,[5] was a covert biological and chemical warfare research and development unit of the Imperial Japanese Army that engaged in lethal human experimentation and biological weapons manufacturing during the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937–1945) and World War II. I (From Wikipedia).

When Japan surrendered, Americans wanted sole access to the records of these vile studies, because they would be valuable for developing biological weapons. Americans granted immunity to the staff/doctors at Unit 731 for their co-operation, and much of the specifics of what they did there was covered up from the other Allied countries.

Some people were tried and convicted in Russian war trials for their role in these atrocities.

I guess it wasn't just the Nazis doing this kind of thing.
