Today I am grateful for:

Nice enough weather today.

I went for a little walk around the horse pasture with Roxy, and it was a challenge with all the snow. I should try with the snow shoes next time.

I let the ponies and goats out into their bigger area for a few minutes. The goats enjoyed chewing on the little poplar saplings, and the ponies bucked and farted for about two minutes before declaring themselves spent.

I decided to talk to our "leader" (she has a title, our president?) at the pottery studio over the phone about the things I mentioned here yesterday. She didn't actually solve anything, but at least she listened.

I went to see River. We had a lesson today.

K was not stupid with me today, mainly because he wasn't teaching a lesson, I guess. He goes back to being a normal person when he isn't in "lesson mode".

I got to see my friend's new horse. A little Icelandic mare. She lost her other horse recently. I mentioned that here.

River actually squealed a bit at her when they sniffed noses. They just met.

Our lesson went well. We are working on the shoulder towards us still, but adding to the challenge by doing it as we are walking, and then keeping the movement fluid. Also working on teaching him to back while I am behind him at Liberty (incrementally asking from his shoulder, then his side, then his hip), and continuing to work on softly responding to pressure on his halter (he still has the instinct to resist pressure).

Then we talked about the show results (for the ridden pattern that I did as a freestyle. It's already posted here from about two weeks ago). I scored well, but did not win or place. A bit mystifying, as I thought we had done a really good job from an equitation and difficulty perspective. I am happy with what we did together, though.

It can be really hard to know what judges are looking for at the best of times, and a free style even more so. They didn't give us much to go on, either.

I came home and had a bath, and a nap, and I might continue to address envelopes.

I learned that because of tidal locking and synchronized orbits, we only see one side of the Moon's surface.

Due to tidal locking, the Moon has a 1:1 spin–orbit resonance. This rotation–orbit ratio makes the Moon's orbital periods around Earth equal to its corresponding rotation periods. This is the reason for only one side of the Moon, its so-called near side, being visible from Earth. That said, while the movement of the Moon is in resonance, it still is not without nuances such as libration, resulting in slightly changing perspectives, making over time and location on Earth about 59% of the Moon's surface visible from Earth.[158]
