Dec. 15th, 2022 10:33 pmToday I am grateful for:
Pleasant weather.
That made it easier to get hooves trimmed at home. The farrier is very kind and patient with my old girl Hollywood, who is arthritic and has a tough time when you have to pick up one of her better feet, because of the strain on the others. This farrier gives her lots of breaks and does some creative things to get the job done kindly.
Dandy, who is often a tiny bit hysterical, managed to just about not even notice he was getting his feet trimmed as long as there was the distraction of treats. While some people might look down on bribery, I see it as just getting the job done. Hopefully we won't always need to use bribery, but if it works, it works.
All said, it went smoothly, and that is good.
Since I had some daylight left, Roxy and I went to the park down the road for a while. I haven't been there much yet this winter, I've just been getting up too late in the day to have time (after doing chores and such) before it is dark. This time of year the sun sets at about 5 pm.
We had a nice walk, since it was fairly mild temperature wise, and the sun was shining. I used snow shoes for part of the trail (those muscles were hardly ready for it), and walked where the snow had been cleared.
Someone comes and feeds the chickadees at this park, and has them trained to come to your hand for sunflower seeds. I figured this out a few years ago, so now whenever I come to this park I try to bring some seeds. They actually initiated the feeding today by flying up to me and yelling a bit for food, so I fed them.
It is such an amazing thing, to have little wild birds come sit on your hand to eat. They are so beautiful.
I really enjoyed getting out today. This whole winter I feel like I just haven't been getting enough nice outside time.
I came home and had a nap.
I learned that in 1831 the Swedish Navy planted over 300,000 oak trees with the intention of harvesting them for ships 150 years later. They remain unharvested today.
They are on the island of Visingsö. The forest is being "managed", I guess some of it is now being harvested, but most of it remains.
