Dec. 19th, 2022 12:59 amToday I am grateful for:
Having River, and how he gives me a reason to leave the house and go somewhere else, engage with people, and move my body. It is SO EASY in winter to just hibernate, but River and the engagement with R at the barn keeps me doing something, and working towards goals.
Today I went to the barn for a little gathering. I got there a little later than most, but there were still some people around. It was especially nice to see the one woman who isn't taking lessons right now.
I gave R her leather pouch (for spiritual cards, maybe?) and right away her daughter and the Sunday rider were coveting it, so maybe I need to make some more? Sunday rider and I don't usually exchange gifts, but hey, why not.
I am at a funny place with leather, given that I am a vegetarian. I don't pretend that it is somehow not cruelty. These days, I am mostly just using leather from an enormous stock pile I built before I became a vegetarian. I barely touched it for years while I worked out my feelings about it. For now, I am going to just use what I have, maybe use leather that is "upcycled" from jackets or something for my crafts.
I worked with River, though it was pretty cold. He did really well on our ground work, and we spent a fair bit of time trying pretty unsuccessfully to navigate a rope gate obstacle bareback with just the neck rope. We're not quite there yet on the sequence of movements to navigate it, but he tried for me. It's still pretty amazing how much lateral movement we have together with just the neck rope.
I came home and did some outdoor chores, let the goats walk around inside the garage for a while to get out of their pens, hauled some water to the ponies, checked blankets, extra hay.
Then I came in and had a nap, and spent some quality time with Celeste who is a grade A snuggler. She is probably one of the most affectionate cats we've ever had. She LOVES belly pets, and grabs your hand with her front paws to pull your hand to her head. She gets under the covers and kneads on you, and purrs the whole time.
Today I learned about supernumerary body parts. I knew you could have extra fingers or toes and such, but did not realize that being a hermaphrodite was in this category, nor did I know people could have an extra kidney, spleen, vagina, or penis.
"Many additional body parts form by the same process as conjoined twins: the zygote begins to split but fails to completely separate. This condition may also be a symptom of repeated occurrences of continuous inbreeding in a genetic line."
I found it fascinating that there is a condition where you have phantom feelings for an arm or leg that WAS NEVER THERE. Like, you can be born with two arms and two legs, but you feel like you have an extra arm or leg. Most people end up thinking about it all the time, wanting to amputate it, but they can't, because it was never there in the first place.
