Jan. 3rd, 2023 02:13 amToday I am grateful for:
Decent weather. I would much rather have long stretches of these temperatures than wild swings from -30 C to -3 C back and forth.
My Sweetie made a make-do switch in the porch that works, until he can more thoroughly investigate the situation. The porch used to be a stairway to the basement, when the house was on the original property. When we moved it here, we made a floor in that room at normal floor level. The light switch for that room though, was at the right level for someone going down a set of stairs, and thus only about two feet above where the floor is now. For three years, any time I want to turn on the porch light I had to root around under all the jackets down near the floor to find the switch. Somehow, it never bothered my husband. It bothers me.
For now, he installed a remote control switch that works well, and is mounted at the right height. Why did he never do this before, I ask? Well, at least it is there now.
He left for his work apartment today, and I already miss having him here. It was nice to have someone around, to have help with the chores, and so on. We had a good holiday season together, and he got lots of rest. For the most part I decided to let him decide if he wanted to do any work on things or not. He said that the stretch of work from now until maybe spring, is going to be a real grind for him. The job is ramping up.
I went to town for pottery, and was once again the only one there. I brought the speaker that links to my phone so I could play music, and that was a great improvement.
I put some handles on the mug bodies I threw the other day, and trimmed the mugs first. Then I tried throwing some small items, and actually found it difficult because I've been working on throwing bigger and bigger things. I now find it weird to throw something small.
I did not have to get groceries, so I felt good not being rushed to be done to leave me time to shop.
I am very grateful for all of the beautiful and useful things we bought over the holidays. For all the food we bought, and books, etc.
I came home and watched the first episode of "The Fringe". It was okay.
I learned that in medieval England, an area of special legal jurisdiction extended around the monarch and his court and traveled with him. Legal cases that arose within a 12-mile radius of the monarch (known as the "verge") were tried before a Court of the Verge. There were various officers like the Coroner of the Household, and the Clerk of the Market that had jurisdiction within the verge.
So, if the court were travelling, the verge would always be a 12 mile zone that went with them. If the monarch were in a residence, then it would be a radius around that residence. I wonder what happened at sea, as there were also different maritime laws.
