Mar. 3rd, 2023 12:39 amToday I am grateful for:
Warmer weather today, even though it was overcast.
That River and I did fairly well in the fund raising show. As expected, we didn't do that well in the obstacle course because of it being timed; I am not that interested in trying to be fast in something like that. We still placed 5th in the ridden version of it (near the bottom in the class where I was on the ground with him), which is pretty good considering that I wasn't even trying to be fast in that class.
We won the walk trot canter class. There were only two entrants in our division, but the other person is considered to be a pretty decent rider, so she was very real competition.
We aren't supposed to "care about winning", but we do, don't we.
I didn't need to go anywhere today, which was kind of nice. I spent a fair chunk of the afternoon just hanging out with the goats and ponies.
Brownie is such a sweet little goat. I just sat and gave her scritchies and petted her while she got all dreamy-eyed.
Dandy came over to play "there must be a cookie stuck to your body somewhere" and get some affection. I haltered him and did some leading and some yields. I really haven't worked with him much this winter. I kept it short and sweet.
I also picked up a fair amount of their manure. If I can manage to keep up with it, it makes Spring a little more pleasant.
Then I came in, putzed around on the computer, had a nap. Very low key.
I learned that Sylvester Stallone is the only actor to have featured in a #1 box office hit over six consecutive decades.

Date: 2023-03-03 09:05 pm (UTC)I struggle with all of that, because of the inherent lie about it all.
Yes, even competing is a win. Sure it is. Just completing a class is a win. There is SO MUCH EFFORT that goes into just being there it isn't funny.
Yet, the whole structure of competition isn't really a celebration of that at all, is it?
I am one of those people who would almost prefer a competition where there are no placings, and everyone just gets a card with areas of excellence and areas where you could improve, and none of it is public.

Date: 2023-03-04 06:57 am (UTC)An acquaintance posted a photo on social media of a still-life of a plated dinner at an airport VIP lounge, two glasses of expensive champagne, and a business-class boarding pass for her overseas trip. Why would anyone be impressed by this? Is conspicuous consumption a form of competition?

Date: 2023-03-04 08:09 am (UTC)I still have friends who post about food they cooked, and meals out. Sure they look nice, but I have no idea what this is about. I'm happy for them, but...?
