My Mom told her about my sister and her husband travelling to Germany, because that's where his Dad is from. His Dad served in WWII for Germany, and was taken prisoner by Canada, and lived in a camp on Canadian soil. He took part in a program where prisoners worked on Canadian farms. He was so well treated by Canada, and formed such a good opinion of our country, that he chose to live here after the war. How many countries can say that their prisoners of war fell in love with them?
So, the distant relative had her own, similar story. Someone in her family was a Canadian, who fought in Germany in WWII, and was taken prisoner by Germany. Of course the prison camp was horrifying, and he managed to escape. He was trying to find refuge in the German countryside.
A German family decided to hide him and protect him because he was Canadian. The reason why? Because they had a German son, who was captured by Canada, and he was allowed to write home. He told his family that he was safe, and well-fed, and that he was well-treated. His German family was so grateful that their son was safe and cared for, and that he would likely return home soon after the war, so they decided that they would care for a Canadian soldier. A Canadian family's son.
I think Canada did it's best to fight a clean fight, and I think it says a lot about us that we treated the prisoners so well. It's how we should always be.
