Jul. 17th, 2023 01:38 amToday I am grateful for:
Better air quality today, a 6 or 7 down from a 10 +. We had a tiny rain last night that maybe helped to clear it a bit.
Kind of a lazy start to the day, which is probably a real treat for my husband.
He brought one more wheel barrow load of topsoil for the big hole for the shrubs.
We picked maybe half a gallon of raspberries, which we washed and I froze on cookie sheets so they will not be a giant solid lump.
We went to see River, and he is doing okay, considering how smokey it's been.
We worked on the outdoor obstacles, and it really is something how after a few years of working on them, he is still not fantastic and the turn on the haunches. He CAN BE, but it isn't consistent.
Then we went into the indoor arena to work on the Liberty circles, and working on "in" and "out" to control the size.
I am grateful that Earl the barn cat is still there, sweet and friendly as ever, though looking a little rough. He's a pretty old cat. I do love the guy, and he's always so sweet. He and the other cat, Ruby, are so nice.
We came home and let everyone out for a while, and we went and weeded in the garden for about an hour. I am really glad my husband came to help with this; he doesn't always have the time to do so.
Somehow weeding the garden WITH someone is just...less of an onerous chore than doing it alone. I don't always HATE weeding, as it can sometimes be very pleasant to be there listening to the birds, and depending on whether or not it is a nice temperature or how many mosquitoes there are.
Then we came in and watched "The Nice Guys", which is a pretty good movie. We've watched it before but it's been a while.
I tried to learn something about the Taiping Rebellion, though there's a lot to unpack here. Basically, this one guy decided he was the brother of Jesus Christ, and his purpose was to free China from the Quing Dynasty so they could be ruled by him (forming a Christian Monarchy).
The conflict resulted in over 20 million deaths (according to one source, Wikipedia says 100 million), most from the side effects of war like starvation and displacement.
It took place from 1850 until the fall of Tianjing (now Nanjing) in 1864.
Though the Quing Dynasty did win (with help at the last minute from England and America), it was weakened, and fell not long after.
This war shaped modern China in many ways.

Date: 2023-07-17 09:00 pm (UTC)I often do hate it because it is one of those endless tasks; it's not like you can do it once and be done for that year, you are never really done!
