Today I am grateful for:

Good summer weather.

I really didn't do anything of note before I went to the barn today.

I went to the barn, and saw right away that the flies have been irritating River's eyes. They really got inflamed last year, requiring medical intervention because the flies can bring fecal matter into the eyes. River may be sensitive as well.

So, I didn't want it to get that bad again. I didn't have a fly mask at the barn.

I asked R if I could borrow one until the next time I come, but she declined on the grounds that it might get lost in the pasture or damaged.

That actually really bothered me, because she might have some faith in me as a person that if that happened I would replace her mask.

I tried to let it go, and just went home again to find River's mask. It wasted 40 minutes (20 minutes each way) of driving.

I did work with River, and that went well, in spite of the heat. I tried to work on the "lightest ask" principle for his turn on the hindquarters and immediate reward for one step, and it did seem to help.

We worked on our Liberty circles and the canter, and got a good response.

Did some ridden work, and I feel that we are just missing something crucial with that lead. His trot was good and forward (for him) today.

His eye was already looking a little better by the time we were finishing up, as I had cleaned it with a cloth and put some fly repellent ointment around it for our work.

The rider I often see on Sunday was there today, and R's daughter L. The Sunday rider is a single woman, and she was talking about trying to meet people online, and that she hasn't had much luck.

I still feel like the best thing is to meet someone through friends, but I don't know if anyone even has enough friends anymore to date like that. She is already at an age where probably most people are married or in serious relationships.

This led to lots of joking around and story telling. I think R's daughter L has a pretty good sense of humor (she's 15/16) though it takes a while for her to open up with it.

R joined in too. A real fun hen fest.

So, I got pretty much NOTHING done at home today, and the day just took it's own course.

I did let everyone out into their pastures for a while when I got home.

I learned that I G Farben (a pharmaceutical conglomerate that includes the Bayer company) used slave labor during WWII, performed human drug tests using women from concentration camps (who all died during the process) and provided the camps with Zyklon B.

They literally bought 150 women for 150 Reichsmarks each, they died before they concluded the tests, and requested another 150 women at the same price.

They were indeed put on trial after the war, but I guess nothing serious enough happened to, you know, maybe put them out of business or actually penalize the people who made those decisions.

Most of those who were put on trial were acquitted, and the others had pretty light sentences, and most of them did not serve their full sentences and went right back to work in the company in high stations once again.
