Jul. 23rd, 2023 11:35 pmToday I am grateful for:
More full-on summer.
I had trays of raspberries in the freezer, so I took them out and put the berries into freezer bags.
I did another mountain of dishes.
I managed to finally plant the shrubs and some perennial plants in the area beside the house that we dug out and filled with topsoil.
I went to see River, and his fly mask was still on. I didn't have to go hunting for it.
He did break his "made on purpose to break" halter that R said he should wear to help keep the mask on. She repaired it again for me, which was very thoughtful of her.
River's eye is a tiny bit puffy still, but looks only irritated and not infected. The flies have been bothering him, though hopefully the fly mask will help with that.
We are now in the part of summer where the flies and mosquitoes make it hard sometimes for the horses to focus. Poor River, they go right for his groin, his eyes, his nose.
He was lethargic from the heat, but we did okay. A little more progress with the turn on hind quarters, backing from behind, and Liberty circles. I did get Liberty circle canters.
We rode in the outdoor arena, and I think we finally did get the right lead on the canter transition to the right. If nothing else, he got less upset and anticipation about the transitions.
I did chat with R for a while about a mare she is working with. She feels like she's not getting as much accomplished with her as she'd hoped. She feels that the mare is still VERY sensitive to environment, such as if she's going over a pole and bumps it, the mare gets very upset, and seems to be more worried about the pole next time they have a lesson. That kind of thing.
R is thinking that the mare might need to be boarded there for a longer period of time, and to also be with other horses for better social skills (this mare was kept alone by the owner, which is not good for horses' mental health).
I came home and let everyone out for a while, and picked more raspberries. They are really coming in hard now. I MUST pick again tomorrow.
I learned that though something like 75% of all tornadoes take place in the United States, many of the deadliest tornadoes occur in parts of India/Pakistan (as in more than 100 people killed). This is likely due to population density.
