Jul. 27th, 2023 01:04 amToday I am grateful for:
Decent temperatures. A little cool, which is a nice change.
I moved some things in the living room so that the end result is a small amount of things are now put away and out of my visual field. No, they're not gone, but they aren't hooey. I just needed to put them away properly so the room looks a bit more clear. Small improvements add up.
River and I had a lesson today, and that went well. He's more energetic when it's cooler.
When I got him out of the pasture, everyone was all worked up about everything, River included. He calmed down once we were in the barn, and once again I think he was grateful for the opportunity to calm down. I wonder who starts all the nonsense out there.
Our lesson went well, and I feel like today we actually got a bit of useful challenge. We clarified the difference between Liberty "in hand" (which is more like staying at your side, even if you don't have any tack) and "draw" and "neutral circles".
In ridden work, we worked on spiraling in and out of a circle at a canter to get River to use his body a little better.
We brainstormed some Liberty elements that we could use for a Freestyle class that R is doing for barn members this September. She "judges" these, but I wish she would just let them stand as expressions of our accomplishments, because everyone does things that are different and how do you have one person compete doing normal Liberty work, to another person who owns a trick riding saddle and does that for their entry? There is no way to judge those two things against each other. Especially since there is no set criteria or known judging standard. It's just R saying who did a great job.
I came home, let everyone out for a while.
When I went back outside to put them in again, I spent some time grooming Dandy's long mane, and then spent a fair amount of time just sitting with the ponies/goats, as it was pleasantly cool and not much for mosquitoes.
It was so nice just to pet/scratch the ponies, and let them nuzzle me. Dandy especially really communicates with his muzzle, and is not nippy, but likes to explore my clothes and such.
I learned that "Hello" was not really that commonly used as a greeting before the popularization of the telephone.
