Today I am grateful for:

Another beautiful, sunny day.

I've been talking to a man who lives in the small city nearby, who posted a very desperate sounding ad in the marketplace. He is overwhelmed with cats and kittens, and is trying to rehome them.

He says he's tried the local shelters, but they are full. I contacted them on his behalf, and yes, they are full. One place at least said they could put him on a waiting list, so there's that.

I know it's too easy to get wrapped up in a situation like this, but it's pretty tough to ignore what seemed like a sincere plea for help. This guy seems maybe...simple, or not quite right? He just ended up taking in some cats, and they had kittens. Yes, it's too many cats and he knows it.

In talking to one cat rescue, they said "he's a hoarder, it's too big a group, you should call the SPCA".

Well, even if it is a hoarding situation, why would they not take SOME of the cats?

He says there are 18 cats. Sure, that's lots, but he's aware of it, and seems ready to rehome them, so I wouldn't say that was hoarding. The pictures he sent of the cats does look like things are getting a little dire in terms of housing, but the cats look well fed and not too bad off.

He cannot afford to get them all fixed, and he knows it's too much. I am frustrated that there is no help available to him at this time.

I did really emphasize to him to speak with the one group who would at least put him on a waiting list, because this is the only hope he has right now.

I spent most of the day trying to get more mulching done. I am not really happy with the overall look, it doesn't look "finished", I know it needs 4x4 poles for edging or something. I just want it to look nice around the house, not all weeds. I always like how bark mulch with some shrubs looks around buildings; when done right it looks low-maintenance. I am really starting to appreciate things that look nice and are low maintenance.

I did go for a little pasture walk with Roxy, and reminded myself that we did a good job of clearing those thistles, and that our nice little pathway lined with trees (also something we created by mowing through it every year) looks good.

I learned about William Dampier, a naturalist who used piracy as a way to travel the world. He is the first naturalist to formally study and record species from Australia, and made numerous contributions to language by being the first recorded use of words like "barbecue", "avocado", and "chopsticks".

His work as a naturalist greatly assisted other naturalists, including Charles Darwin. His work also assisted in the colonization of Australia (for better or worse).

He completed two circumnavigations of the globe, and died during the third.

We have local programs that help people get their cats fixed in situations like that - is there perhaps something similar available for him?
