Aug. 12th, 2023 01:34 amToday I am grateful for:
Nice temperatures. Warm, not hot.
We didn't do much before going to see River.
I have been talking to our hay guy that we just got square bales from, to see if he has more. We might take more, but R at the barn just found out that her regular supplier of square bales might not have any available this year, and she needs a LOT of square bales. If we can at least get some bales from our guy, it will be a start.
He said that he is waiting until Monday to see if some other people are committing to buying the bales from him, and if they don't by then, we (us, and R will buy the rest) can buy them.
River did really well today, as far as willingness. We worked through our freestyle pattern, and he did well enough with the elements that I left it at that for today. It still needs polish, but he was TRYING, and did a lot better at the small circles and halts and actually going through the pool noodle obstacle. I wanted to reward him by not drilling it.
I did ride him with the saddle and bitless bridle so we could do our spiral exercises, both at a trot and a canter each way, and he did well with it today. I THINK he might have actually gotten some very good collection in a couple of spots.
I felt good about today's efforts, because I didn't have to belabor anything, and kept everything positive. I like it when we can do that.
We came home and let everyone out for a while, and found some vegetables for supper in the garden. Our zucchini is a bit late, but it looks like there will be lots coming. We picked one today for supper, some small turnips (you can eat the tops like spinach in a stir fry), new red potatoes, and lettuce.
It made a nice meal.
We watched the newest "Guardians of the Galaxy", and it was good, but also very difficult to watch. It brought up a lot about animal testing, abuse, and so on, and was just plain heart wrenching.
It left me feeling pretty upset, because I really do care about animals. I know that the movie was trying to make people care, that was the point, but it left me feeling pretty helpless to do anything about it.
At least I did find out that the director, James Gunn is an animal rights activist, and that he is not just using the animal issues in the movie to be manipulative or exploitative, he actually does advocate for animal rights, and hopefully some of the money from this film will go towards helping them.
I learned a bit about "Kilometer Zero", the point where the Western Front of WWI where the fighting took place just a hair short of the Swiss border. The Swiss dug trenches and built observation posts all along this border area, to make sure that no violations of their border took place.
