Sep. 12th, 2023 02:44 amToday I am grateful for:
Sunny and pleasant weather.
My Sweetie continued to work on the siding.
I did a variety of smaller chores. I did dishes, changed the cat litter, hung the wet horse blankets to dry and got some other ones in the tub.
Our local gas station is under renovations, bringing new tanks in. It won't re-open until maybe the early part of October.
That means I have to be smarter about fueling up when I go to town, because there are no nearby gas stations.
Since I didn't realize that the gas station was still closed, and would be closed for the rest of the month, I did not get fuel yesterday. Today I ended up driving to a highway gas station that is effectively almost as far away as the town I get groceries.
Well, at least now I know.
Then I tackled cleaning out the goat/pony shed. I tend to not clean it out a lot, I let the wood shavings sort of form a packed layer and put new shavings on top all winter. It's frozen, so not much of a health hazard. Over the summer, their pen is often wet, and the high layer of compacted shavings keeps the floor of their shed above the moisture.
I do need to clean it out though, so that it doesn't get too high, and I can add a new layer of shavings all winter again.
It sounds unhygienic, but the ventilation is good in their shed, and the ponies rarely poop in there. The shavings just keep packing down in a tight, dry wafer that drains really well.
Anyhow, my Sweetie helped me, and we took many wheel barrows of packed shavings out of the shed and took them to the compost heap.
Then I added a fresh cube of bedding shavings.
We came in and watched the last episodes of "Schitt's Creek", and it was all very touching. A very good show, and I'm glad it actually ended properly.
I learned that because of the Gulf Stream, there is a region of Norway that is very moderate; not nearly as cold as it should be, given that it is north of the Arctic Circle. It's record cold is only -18.4 Celsius, or -1.1 F. This is the municipality of Tromso.
The climate in the city and surrounding municipality of Tromso is actually boreal, when it should have been tundra, yet it IS still above the Arctic Circle, so it has the very long summer days and a period of total darkness during the winter months.
