Oct. 8th, 2023 02:12 amToday I am grateful for:
Warmer weather today, and very lovely.
I didn't have to go anywhere today.
My husband getting more done on the siding.
I helped him a bit today, mainly by washing a bunch of the vinyl siding that had gotten bird droppings on it.
I also did some laundry, and peeled some of the stickers off of the windows. Somehow we've had these windows for a year now, and never took all the stickers off of them. We got used to them, and forgot about them.
I did some of the preparation for another area I want to mulch. I weed-whacked the area, raked it, and then ran a tiller over it to try to even out the ground. That's as far as I got today.
Then I helped my husband put away tools and such for the night.
I let the animals out into their larger pastures for a while.
Then we watched some more "Breaking Bad". Such good writing for this show.
I learned that two pieces of similar metal, if perfectly smooth and polished, and while in a vacuum, will bond together on the molecular level into one piece if held together. This is called cold welding, and might have useful applications in space.
In an atmosphere, this won't happen because there is always going to be some other matter between the two pieces, and there will always be a thin layer of oxidized metal on the surface of each piece (like rust on iron, or the green patina on copper).

Date: 2023-10-09 07:00 am (UTC)I might skip scraping at the porch ceiling and just prime/paint the steps, which are also in bad shape.
The back porch was not replaced, though it was supposed to have been.
The back fence was not replaced, rebuilt or repaired. (I might hammer a nail or two in before it gets cold, or prepare to do it so that the job suddenly gets done.)

Date: 2023-10-09 07:25 am (UTC)You can keep scraping the porch ceiling, even if it's colder, though you might not get it painted it will be ready for next summer.
Use a power drill (if you have access to one) and screws to shore up fence boards and rails, they'll hold better than nails.
It's tough when it seems like you might be the only one trying to do the maintenance.

Date: 2023-10-10 05:21 am (UTC)I want the loose and broken fence boards fixed NOW, and though the aesthetic is important to me, I will stress the safety aspect.
I want an old extension cord removed from a huge hanging tree branch NOW, because the aesthetic is important to me. However, I will stress the safety aspect.
On a more positive note, the milk box interior has been insulated, and a backer board was secured in place. I'll paint it this week, and it can be given trim any time after that.
Aesthetics seem to be important to me only, perhaps?

Date: 2023-10-10 06:28 am (UTC)At our place, when there are "bigger fish to fry", things that have purely aesthetic value get lost in the shuffle.
Our current bathroom has crumbling plaster walls, and it will not be repaired until it is no longer our bathroom (we are planning to put one in our current bedroom, but we have to have the NEW bedroom in the addition finished first). When it is no longer our bathroom, we can address the walls.
Well, we've been in this house for four years now, and not only is the addition still not finished, but we are a long ways from having the other main floor bathroom finished.
There is pretty much nothing I can do that will make our current bathroom more pleasant to look at.
