Today I am grateful for:

Warm and sunny. A very beautiful day.

I helped my Sweetie for a while before I went to the barn. Nothing too strenuous, but assisting with the siding.

He continued to work on it after I left, and got more done.

I did my best today to encourage River to be "with" me, beginning with going to him in the pasture, and letting him come to me first, and so on. Seeing if it was his choice or not.

There was a LOT OF NOISE and commotion around us. The neighbors to R, right beside the outdoor riding arena, were zooming around their yard on dirt bikes with their dogs chasing them. I kid you not.

Then there were motorcycles constantly going by on the paved road that goes past the property.

THEN there was a freaking DRONE zooming around above us.

In spite of everything, he was pretty relaxed today. I rode him with the neck ring, but kept the bridle on in case I needed it because he's not as focused when we are outside.

The Sunday rider showed up about the same time I did, which is nice. She was also working on her freestyle pattern. She said River's presence was helping her horse relax and focus, and likely the presence of her horse was good for River too. Horses generally are happier with other horses close by.

Anyhow, he was better with listening in general, but it probably helped that I had the bridle on, even if I was using the neck rope mostly. I'm sure he knows the difference.

I came home and we watched more "Breaking Bad". I've already watched the whole thing, my husband has not seen all of it. It's not as intense to watch it again, because you know what's going to happen, so there's no real tension. It's still good enough to watch again, for the sheer appreciation of it.

I learned that Japan celebrates Christmas, though it is a little different. Christmas Eve is more like Valentine's Day, with romantic dinners and evenings for couples. Christmas Day is more of a day for parties with friends and family the way we celebrate New Year's Eve.

New Year's in Japan is about sitting down to meals with family.

The most popular food for Christmas? A giant bucket of KFC. Yup. They apparently have to put in their order six weeks in advance.

My Japanese friends were delighted to spend Christmas Day with us when they were living in Canada; apparently it was a tradition on Christmas Eve to eat cake with whipped cream, and danged if that wasn't what we served that year. (I think it was a linzertorte with softly whipped cream flavoured with Framboise, with raspberries on the side.)
