Today I am grateful for:

Some sunshine today. Very nice temperatures still.

I had a good phone conversation with Sister E. She's trying to join up with some activities to keep busy through winter. She played some Pickle ball today. Her husband played some Pool, apparently their community center has a table. It sounded like he was reluctant to get out and try to do something; my sister says they've been sitting around too much lately and just watching T.V.

I'm a little surprised by that, since it sounds to me like they're always doing something, but maybe she means HER HUSBAND is just sitting around watching T.V.. My sister is not one for much sitting around.

At least she says they've been keeping up with walking the dog lots.

I had to laugh though, they've only been in their new place in town for two months, and she's already thinking of making complaints to the town about the terrible state of the pavement and sidewalks in their neighborhood.

I went to see River, and of course I had to catch him for work as hay was literally being tossed to them. I feel like this is just so unfair to him, even if I can let him eat hay in the barn for half an hour as I'm getting ready for our lesson. There usually is still hay there when I turn him out again, but geez, he must always associate me with the loss of his evening meal.

This was our lesson night, though I have to say maybe I need to be more proactive in setting new goals for us, as we are kind of stalled without an upcoming competition to act as a framework.

I kind of feel like it's not that useful on the lessons where we just kind of go through our standard work, though it can also be useful to see if there are any holes in it.

We did spend some time breaking down the cue for the Spanish Walk to see if we could find something that would work better for River, and that helped. It will for sure take time, but I think this cue is more effective than what we were doing.

Of course R also needed to vent some more about the ILHA, as she was not happy about her results for her freestyle entry.

I did watch that video, and though I don't know if it's really a good idea to be honest, but I would have to agree that her "artistic" score being low was fair, because I didn't see a theme to her entry, and though what she was wearing was nice, it didn't look like a costume with a related theme, it looked like a nice red shirt that matched her horse's leg wraps. It looked very nice, but it wasn't artistic in any way, and the music she chose was okay, but not really fitting a theme.

Her technical skill in the freestyle was quite good, but I thought the way it was filmed wasn't capturing some of her best moments to best advantage.

That said, the lack of actual feedback from the ILHA leaves everyone in the dark about how they could improve.

I had a fun exchange with R's teenage daughter, L.

I came home, and my Sweetie and I watched a couple of fun, short videos, but he wanted to go to bed early instead of watching a movie. Though he's been getting to bed at not bad times, he's not getting quite enough sleep. He does have to get up at 6 am to be at work for 8. That just seems barbaric to me.

He says that he's really not sure why they were in such a steaming hurry to have him come work in the office, as no one is organized enough to use him yet. He's literally doing NOTHING right now, but he's going to give it a few weeks to see if they actually have real work for him.

They called him in, even though he still has more "banked time" that he was going to use up so he could keep working on the house. Or, just to be at home. If they don't really have anything for him to do, he's not sure if he should tell them he'd like to keep using up his remaining banked time, or if that's just asking for trouble.

Anyhow, he's not opposed to going to work and doing nothing, if they're going to pay him to do it. It just gets boring for him.

I learned about Project Habakkuk, the concept of building an aircraft carrier out of a mix of wood pulp and ice. The idea was that the wood pulp would make it more buoyant and durable.

Of course, there were good reasons why it ended up not working, but what an interesting idea!

One kind of dumb thing they did, was to prove that the material was "almost bulletproof", they kept doing these demonstrations of shooting at normal ice, which of course shattered, and then shooting at a block of this "pykrete", and the bullets would ricochet....right back at them. It seems like they just kept needing to demonstrate this, again and again, each time the bullets bouncing right back at them, until someone finally got shot in the leg.

This is a Mythbusters episode, where they tried to make a boat out of paper and ice to see if it would have worked.
