Nov. 29th, 2023 01:36 amToday I am grateful for:
A very warm day for this time of year.
I spoke with my adult nephew (Trainwreck's son) on the phone for quite a while today. He's really burnt out on trying to help his Mom deal with her hoard, as the deadline approaches for the transfer of the property.
From what he's saying, his Mom got a small amount of money as a "down payment", and a handshake deal with no contract that if she got it all cleaned out by the possession date, the buyer would pay her another sum.
No one clarified how cleaned up the property has to be to get the second payment, so this is likely the kind of deal where the buyer knows damn well my sister won't have it all empty and the house cleaned like you'd normally expect when you move into a place, so she's probably going to only get a pittance for it.
At the same time, even that pittance is probably worth it, just to have her in a safe place to live in town, where she has running water and heat, and she is in TOWN instead of in an isolated ghost town, alone.
My nephew was there a couple of times, trying to get his Mom to just focus on taking the things she really needs, selling what is worth money, and leaving the garbage for the new owner, since no matter what, she won't have it clean. If she focused on selling what is worth money, she could have gotten a lot more money than the money he was offering if she had it all cleaned out.
Underneath the garbage, she has hidden gems. My nephew found a brand new macerating toilet that was still in the box (that allows you to have a basement bathroom that will pump uphill, basically) that is worth at least $1500. He will use it, so I'm glad he found it.
She still has all kinds of furniture that none of it is worth MUCH, but collectively could have netted her a few thousand dollars if she had made up her mind to sell it. She has dishes, towels, glassware, decor items, mirrors and antique picture frames, and so much of it would have sold if she contacted the right kind of store. Now, a lot of it will likely just end up in the dump.
Yes, there's garbage too. Books that are now ruined, magazines, old wicker baskets, bags of stuffed animals that no one will want now.
Hopefully, in about a week, it's just "time's up" and no more worrying about it.
I went to see River, right on time to pull him away from the freshly thrown hay. Sigh.
I chatted with R a bit. She really hated the whole Covid thing, in that she never believed that we should have quarantined, or been forced to have vaccines or wear masks. She continues to connect Covid to every other negative thing in the world. Like if someone develops a completely unrelated illness, it must be because they had a Covid vaccine. If someone put on weight, it's because of Covid isolation.
So today's topic was shingles, and how a fairly young woman who takes lessons has shingles. It is likely because she had a Covid vaccine. Also, some teenagers at her daughter's school have shingles, in fact JUST ABOUT EVERYONE SHE KNOWS HAS SHINGLES NOW BECAUSE OF THE COVID VACCINE!!!
I try not to agree or disagree with her. Apparently there is a connection between people who actually got sick with Covid and getting a shingles outbreak. That said, anyone who ever had Chicken Pox, or even got the Chicken Pox vaccine could get shingles too. I don't know. I don't care.
River did well with our work today. He was in a good mood, and I did my best to be very positive and reward his efforts. He did actually trot the "away" circles, which is great!
He did well in our ridden work too, putting a lot of effort into the spiral work at trot and canter.
My Sweetie showed up just as I was putting everything away (I was trying to be concise today, and be done in a slightly shorter time frame; I tend towards longer sessions, which aren't always necessary).
We came home, and got food ready in a timely manner, and were able to watch a movie and still get him to bed in good time. We watched "Captive State", which is a really good movie.
I learned about Deep Lake in Antarctica. It is a body of water about ten times saltier than the ocean, so it doesn't freeze even though it is almost always far below freezing temperatures. It is not useful at all to creatures like penguins, as it supports very little life and is too salty to drink, and is far colder than the ocean. It does support a community of microbes, that are being studied.
