Dec. 17th, 2023 11:48 pmToday I am grateful for:
Nice weather still. By evening it was clear skies and bright stars.
A slow, sleepy start to the day. My husband had some time to himself before I got up, just to play video games and read stuff on the internet.
We didn't do much before we both went to the barn.
Overall River did well today. He started off kind of sleepy (he got some extra mash; one of the other horses didn't get theirs for some reason so R said he could have it).
He did well with the target training for the Spanish walk and while he is still confusing the "away" circle with our normal draw circle, with time we'll sort it out. We've had to go through this lots before where I teach him something new, and at first he gets it, but then he confuses it with something else for a while.
I've taught him enough cues for Liberty that the difference between them all gets a little hard to remember, I'm sure. I have to do my part and be absolutely clear with my body and voice, and to be consistent. He'll get it all sorted out with practice.
Then we did some ridden work, going around pylons, trying to by rhythmic, and getting good canters and halts.
I did feel like I got into my "demanding" mode a bit, but overall it was good.
I remembered to bring the speakers, so we had music tonight. The Sunday rider was not there at the same time today, but we did talk with R for a while.
We came home, my Sweetie had a bath while I made supper, and that's about it.
I've been re-reading Game of Thrones, and really enjoying it. I think I've read the books through twice already since they were first published something like 25 years ago, and watched the series, but I'm always seeing different subtle things each time. What's nice, is that I am finally not getting lost in who the characters are, and where they're from. There are SO MANY characters, and from all over the place, and it is so hard to keep track of their underlying motives and allegiances and so on. It took me forever to get through it the first time because I had to keep going back and re-reading bits to get the gist of it again.
Watching the series helped a lot, because it helped me visualize faces and clothing styles, and the other visual cues about where they were from etc. I think of that the whole time I'm reading.
I learned that in Italy, there are "imaginary streets" that are used to register people with no fixed address in order for them to get I.D. and to access the medical system and so on. It began as a way to register travelers like circus performers while they worked in a city, but evolved over time.

Date: 2023-12-19 06:33 am (UTC)It IS nice that my husband comes with me to the barn. He always did at the other barns too.
You don't see that much for husbands/boyfriends with the other riders, the only other men are generally fathers.
I don't know why you don't see more male riders these days, especially I find it weird that you still see lots of male riders in competition on television, and lots of big-time well-known trainers are men, but where are the males at the riding barns?
I know a lot of men who do rodeo just learn at home on the ranch, but do NONE of them ride at riding barns?
There is ONE male kid taking lessons at the barn right now.
I really like it when my husband can come with me. I like his company and his help. I like that he also forms relationships with the owners and the other riders so that he knows who I'm talking about, and so that it feels more like a community.
